Southwest Leadership Academy Charter School (SLA) was founded to address the need for community access to exceptional, leadership-based education in the heart of southwest Philadelphia. Southwest Leadership Academy Charter School supports over 600 students in grades K-8 in single-sex classrooms, leveraging research from the world-renowned Gurian Institute around socio-emotional learning and differentiation between the sexes, fueling growth, leadership, and engagement for all students. Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms are supported by two educators from the SLA team. This translates to more individual student attention and increased opportunities for differentiated instruction.

Job Description

An SLA Custodian helps to keep the building in a clean and orderly condition at all times.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure work is consistent with safety practices, codes, regulations, and specifications.
Prepare school buildings and grounds for daily operations. Ensure that buildings are operational and hazard-free.
Daily groundskeeping ( grass cutting, raking leaves, pruning trees/shrubs, exterior cleanup of all areas utilized by the students and staff.)
Perform general cleaning (dusting, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, vacuuming, etc.) of all building areas as directed.
Complete non-routine cleaning as directed.
Remove garbage, trash, and recycling at scheduled intervals as directed.
Clean assigned facilities and/or grounds to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
Responsible for the cleanliness of all restrooms throughout the school day.
Monitor classroom/office trash and recycling and empty receptacles as needed and at least once daily.
Respond to and handle emergency cleaning and upkeep requests.
Respond to urgent safety/operational concerns (facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.)
Respond to all school emergencies as directed.
Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Building Engineer.
Seasonal Responsibilities
Installation and Removal of window air conditioners, fans, etc.
Snow Removal Duties- Utilize and/or operate various tools, including but not limited to: plows, blowers, spreaders, and shovels.
Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break deep cleaning and repair projects as directed
Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Building Engineer.
Maintenance Responsibilities
Perform minor job-related maintenance on custodial equipment
Assembly/ minor repairs of classroom and office furniture and fixtures.
Occasional painting
Change Lightbulbs
Inform the supervisor immediately of repair needs and safety concerns or hazardous conditions on the property.
Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Building Engineer.
School Function Responsibilities
Set up and breakdown of furniture and equipment
Maintain the cleanliness of spaces during events
Clean up following events to ensure that the building is ready to receive students.
Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Building Engineer.
Physical Requirments include but are not limited to:
Sitting, talking, hearing, and seeing, driving, standing for long periods, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting heavy equipment, climbing ladders, grasping, twisting above the waist, bending at the waist, repetitive hand and arm motion.

Ability to handle heavy equipment and machinery such as a floor buffer
Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Work experience as a janitor or custodian in a school environment
Able to pass a background check and obtain clearances
Posses a valid driver's license
Able to walk/stand for 5 hours
Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
Work all shifts under all weather conditions as assigned
