This position is responsible for directing and administering the Volunteer Services Department at Banner Estrella Medical Center in accordance with the organizational mission and philosophy, including adult, teen and community volunteers. This position also promotes and supports community partnerships and opportunities. Additionally, this position is responsible for developing, managing, and monitoring departmental operating budget(s). This position is also responsible for overseeing Gift Shop operations.

Shift/Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:30-4:30pm

Banner Estrella Medical Center is a 317-bed acute care hospital providing a full range of health care services to the fast growing communities of west Phoenix. POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for directing and administering the Volunteer Services Department at assigned facility/facilities in accordance with the organizational mission and philosophy, including adult, teen and community volunteers. This position also promotes and supports community partnerships and opportunities. Additionally, this position is responsible for developing, managing, and monitoring departmental operating budget(s). This position may be responsible for overseeing Gift Shop operations, Auxiliary fundraising activities and/or other applicable operational area(s).

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Selects, orients, trains, schedules and evaluates employees and volunteers to staff assigned service areas. Provides leadership and growth opportunities for staff. Manages and oversees the maintenance of staff and volunteer files, including annual evaluations, safety education, and/or other regulatory requirements.

  2. Directs, manages, and administers all aspects of volunteer programs, gift shop operations, and/or other specialized programmatic areas at assigned facility/facilities. Develops and implements recruitment, retention and recognition strategies to achieve annual department goals. Interfaces with department directors to create new volunteer opportunities and innovative programs to support respective areas of service and the organizations strategic plan.

  3. Develops and implements departmental policies, procedures, and practices. Participates in maintaining an effective internal control environment to ensure that assets are safeguarded, policies and operating procedures are developed and followed, necessary controls are effective and efficient, proper compliance with existing laws and regulations achieved, and operations comply with the legal and regulatory parameters in which it operates.

  4. Develops and maintains department operational and capital budgets consistent with organizational standards. Manages fundraising activities in applicable area(s), which may involve collaboration with the organizations internal Foundation. May oversee the management of revenues/expenses in assigned area of responsibility, which includes negotiating pricing contracts with external vendors to ensure maximization of profits and/or minimization of operational expenses.

  5. May direct and oversee the day-to-day operations of assigned operational support department(s) within an assigned facility/campus. Ensures that departmental quality measures are in place and regularly monitored and reported.

  6. Contributes in a meaningful way to assigned facility/facilities culture, supporting each healing environment. Actively seeks ways to improve patient satisfaction scores.

  7. Participates in/on a variety of committees, teams, and/or other related groups in order to receive and/or convey information. Develops and facilitates a variety of presentations involving public speaking in order to inform, recruit, solicit funds, garner support for program(s), and/or other related reasons.

  8. May perform specialized functions based on assigned area of responsibility.

  9. This position is responsible for directing the day-to-day activities and operations of the volunteer program, gift shop operations, and/or other specialized programmatic area for assigned facility/facilities, including all employees and volunteers that work within the scope of the program. Internal customers include staff, employees and volunteers. External customers include patients, family members, potential volunteers, vendors, and the community-at-large.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of management as normally obtained through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and a minimum of five years relevant experience related to assigned area(s) of responsibility, including two years prior managerial experience.

Knowledge of personnel management, recruitment/retention and customer relations functions is required, as well as a practical operating knowledge of the areas of planning, developing, training, budgeting and organizing programs. Must have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact and provide assistance to a diverse group of individuals. Must have a working knowledge of personal software packages. Skilled in handling multiple tasks simultaneously. Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and multi-task workload in a fast paced environment. Proficient use of written language in composing a variety of presentations, policies, procedures, and other applicable communication pieces. Skilled in maintaining composure and professional demeanor in difficult and stressful situations. Depending on assignment, may require knowledge of retail management principles and practices.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
