American Express Enterprise Cloud Engineering team is looking for innovators to help us build world-class applications, Cloud platforms and infrastructure supported by integrated CICD, Observability and security capabilities.

As the Engineering Director – Enterprise Cloud Platform Operations, you will lead a team responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of our cloud infrastructure, incorporating SRE principles. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our cloud services, driving operational excellence and reliability engineering across all facets of our cloud operations.

This role will help achieving the primary outcomes of the cloud strategy including better agility, innovation, and economics for all technology teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a team of platform operations engineers, cloud services engineers and platform SREs, providing guidance and support in managing our cloud infrastructure with a focus on reliability and resilience.

  • Lead a scrum team focused on enhancing customer experiences and reducing operational toil.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define operational strategies and implement best practices.

  • Oversee the deployment, monitoring, upgrade, and maintenance of cloud resources, to ensure high availability, reliability, and optimal performance.

  • Develop and implement robust incident management and escalation procedures, to minimize downtime and resolve issues in a timely manner.

  • Continuously evaluate and optimize cloud infrastructure to improve reliability, efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain security posture.

  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics, including reliability metrics such as SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets, to measure the effectiveness of the cloud platforms, reduce friction and enhance developer experience.

  • Provide regular reports and insights to senior management.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the cloud operations team, promoting the adoption of SRE principles and practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

  • 8 years of experience in Platform Operations, API Support or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), with a proven track record of leading teams in managing large-scale cloud infrastructure with a focus on reliability and resilience.

  • Deep understanding of cloud technologies (e.g. Google Cloud) and experience with cloud orchestration and automation tools.

  • Experience with DevOps practices and methodologies, including CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and infrastructure as code.

  • Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Splunk, ELK, Dynatrace.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues and drive resolution in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence decision-making at all levels of the organization.

  • Certifications such as Google Cloud Professional Architect, or relevant SRE certifications are a plus.

Qualifications

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
