Animal Care Technician I

The Byrne Lab in the Ophthalmology Department, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is looking for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and highly organized individual to join our team as a full-time Animal Care Technician I to support our lab's animal research work.

Prior experience with animal care is a requirement. The candidate should be highly motivated, dependable, self-driven, and organized, with good interpersonal skills. A passion for animal care, as well as experimental eye research to ultimately improve treatments for inherited retinal disease, is a must!

Job Summary

 

Provides animal care to laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, enrichment, health observations and basic medical treatments. Performs cage cleaning and facility sanitization procedures in accorance with standard operating procedures and maintains timely and accurate documentation.

 

Essential Functions

Duties will include animal husbandry tasks, such as checking on the health of research animals, providing enrichment, weaning, and consulting with researchers if any health issues arise, including formulating and carrying out animal care plans. Non-husbandry tasks will include stocking medications, organizing surgical supplies, completing pre and post operative paperwork, and managing the animal surgical schedule for the lab. This individual will work closely with DLAR staff and will have the opportunity to progress beyond the Technician I role with subsequent ALAT and LAT certifications, as well as trainings from DLAR staff to collect blood and tissue samples from animals and perform imaging.

Physical Effort

Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
