Scenic Artist/Instructor

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh is currently seeking a dedicated part-time instructor to join our faculty as a Scenic Artist. In this role, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the faculty in Scenic Painting as well as the Technical Director to oversee the scene painting shop, mentor production students and paid student employees, and contribute to the painting of departmental productions. This position necessitates a commitment of 1 course approximately 14 hours per week on a flexible schedule throughout the semester.

Responsibilities include instructing and demonstrating scene painting techniques to students enrolled in our theatrical production program, providing guidance and supervision to paid student employees working within the paint shop, contributing to the organization and upkeep of the scene painting facility, collaborating with faculty colleagues to develop curriculum and project initiatives, and participating in painting scenery for departmental productions.

Qualifications for this position include a BA or BFA, demonstrated expertise in scene painting and theatrical production, exceptional communication skills, particularly in the context of mentorship and instruction, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative and creative educational environment. While prior teaching experience is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references.

In addition, candidates should be able to lift at least 25lbs, work on a ladder, and perform repetitive physical tasks. The successful applicant will be expected to work 12 hours per week at a regular schedule negotiated with the faculty in Scenic Painting and the Head of Design, Technology, and Management.
