This Opportunity

WSP is looking for a skilled Senior Project Chemist for our chemical sciences team in our Portland, ME office. The successful candidate provides advanced level technical assistance and guidance for the collection, identification, compiling, and chemical analysis of environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, and other material. Ensures that documentation and recommendations accurately describe the results of analyses, and address long-term risks to ecological and human health. Assists project leadership with corrective strategies, classification of contaminated materials, and treatment, disposal, and/or onsite remediation activities. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

We are seeking qualified and self-motivated candidates to lead and grow our team, while providing leadership, management, a team-oriented environment, and mentorship to:

  • Provide guidance with data collection efforts for extracting, identifying, and compiling chemical and environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, and other material for research projects, investigations, and surveys.

  • Analyze literature, data, laboratory samples, and other sources of information to uncover primary, secondary, and tertiary chemical impacts.

  • Ensure regulatory requirement compliance pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.

  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, remedy, or clean-up chemical and environmental problems and contamination.

  • Develop action plans for mid to larger-scale pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, and environmental control programs.

  • Provide chemical and environmental risk identification and assessment, offering input with moderate to high-level threat mitigation activities

  • Mentor staff in the completion of data validation, sample and analysis plans, quality assurance plans. technical report preparation, environmental documentation, and standard operating procedures to meet environmental data quality objectives.

  • Work efficiently within culturally and geographically diverse cross-functional teams in executing project work.

  • Provide high level oversight for desk-based research, fieldwork, and/or laboratory work, including measurements, data interpretation, and computer modeling.

  • Perform client relationship advancement and business development to continue delivery of business prosperity and growth objectives.

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with a teaming partners and professionals from a variety of disciplines.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related discipline.

  • 10+ years of experience working as a Chemist.

  • Proficient with analytical chemistry, research, investigation, technology, measurement tools, software, and techniques.

  • Proficient knowledge with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

  • Established experience with reviewing documents and preparing technical deliverables and plans.

  • Highly capable self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization and expressing ideas effectively and professionally to scientific and non-scientific audiences.

  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.

  • Basic proficiency with office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree is preferred.

  • Essential professional licensure/certification.

  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.

  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.#LI-SS2
