The Elevator Mechanic maintains, repairs, modifies, and troubleshoots the elevators, dumbwaiters, and lifts on campus at a journey level with minimal supervision; following University safety procedures, rules and regulations at all times.

The elevator mechanic will also be responsible for monitoring and coordinating required state and local authority mandated testing.

Responsibilities

With minimal supervision, the incumbent shall perform the following duties and responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.

  • * Safely and effectively performs a wide range of elevator system maintenance, repairs and modifications. Completes and documents preventive maintenance, tests and diagnosis of elevator systems. Representative examples of work includes, but is not limited to the following:
    • Assembles, installs, repairs, and maintains elevators, dumbwaiters, and lifts using hand tools, power tools and required testing devices.
    • Tests newly installed elevator systems and equipment to ensure that it meets specifications.
    • Locates malfunctions in elevator equipment and systems such as brakes, motors, doors, switches, and controllers.
    • Adjusts safety controls, counterweights, door mechanisms, and system components such as valves, seals, and brake linings.
    • Tests/troubleshoots wiring connections and circuits with test equipment like volt/amp/ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, thermal imagers and scanning devices. Connects electrical wiring to control panels and electric motors.
    • Complete preventive maintenance on elevators and handicap lifts.
    • Inspects wiring connections, control panel connections, door installations and alignments, and hoist ways to ensure that equipment will operate properly and safely.
    • Repairs Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) for elevator motor controllers. Repair and replace soft start controllers and scanners.
    • Knowledge and experience with all or any of the following controllers: MCE I-Box (traction), MCE 4000, MCE PTC, Hydro MCE PHC 1000, 2000, Otis 211, Tricon O ’Thompson, Elon 1000, GAL Galaxy, Smartrise, Schindler A-321, Sedgwick, Dover DMC, Dover LMH, Dover Relay logic, DA MADOT, Cemco ECI.
  • * Works independently off written work orders. Accepts responsibilities for work assignments.
  • * Reads, understands and interprets technical and construction related documents (drawings, technical manuals and specifications) in order to determine equipment and materials required or appropriate methods of repair or installation.
  • * Ensures proper care in the safe use and maintenance of vehicles, tools and equipment.
  • * Maintains records of corrective and preventive work assignment received through an automated work order system.
  • * Assists other trades mechanics in work projects or special assignments.
  • * Provides support for all campus special events, as needed.
  • * Responds to emergency call-ins on campus and for emergency after-hours work as needed. The elevator mechanic is classified as an essential employee and required to carry an on-duty cell phone on a rotating basis.
  • * Communicates clearly and effectively to co-workers and management, both verbally and in writing.
  • * Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position in a satisfactory manner. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • * Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman elevator mechanic with a minimum of five (5) years of training and experience in the trade which may have included apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training. Licensed as an Elevator Mechanic by the State of New Jersey.
  • * Possess a high school diploma or equivalency (GED).
  • * Possess journey level knowledge of the potential occupational hazards connected with elevator work and the application of associated safety standards and practices.
  • * Demonstrated skill in diagnosing and troubleshooting the cause of elevator failures or breakdowns.
  • * Ability to use a laptop computer to diagnose problems with controllers control logic.
  • * Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with other trades personnel and customers as necessary.
  • * Available for after hours and emergency call back work, which will involve the carrying of a cell phone.
  • * Possess the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • * Possess the ability to study and comprehend new technology.
  • * Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check.
  • * The ability to meet the physical requirements listed below

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The following tasks and skills that would be necessary for any person to fulfill while working as an electrician. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • * stand or walk up to 2 hours at one time for 6-8 hours per day;
  • * sit for less than 2 hours during an 8-hour day;
  • * operates motor vehicles or heavy equipment (e.g., forklift, high reach, cherry picker) infrequently (less than 33% of the workday)
  • * lift or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally (34 - 66% of the workday) and 75 pounds infrequently or seasonally (less than 33% of the workday);
  • * lift up to 75 pounds to waist height and up to 35 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead:
  • * frequently (34 - 66% of work day) use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing or pulling;
  • * occasionally squat, knell, climb, bend, lift overhead, lie down, crawl, knee stand, dig, use hammer drills, push or pull with forces up to 75 pounds (less than 33% of the work day);
  • * frequently climb stairs or ladders, reach overhead, push or pull with forces up to 35 pounds; (34 - 66% of the work day);
  • * work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;
  • * possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and maintain balance.
  • * Will be required to climb and work off a 40-foot ladder, a 60-foot scaffold, a bucket truck and vertical lifts to 80 feet on a daily basis as the need arises. Must be able to climb in and around plenums, chases, utility tunnels and elevator shafts.
  • * Will be required to work around solvents, lubricating oils and small quantities of asbestos using protective equipment daily.
  • * Will be required to work in an area of moderate noise daily.
  • * Will be required to work occasionally on and around live electrical equipment up to 480 volts with proper protective clothing. Will also be required to work on and around rotating machinery and other mechanical systems on a daily basis.
  • * Must have the following vision abilities: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color vision (able to identify and distinguish colors). Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point); Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
