Brown University Research Services Technician in Providence, Rhode Island
Job Description:
This position provides essential services and support to the rodent health and colony management program, veterinary technicians and veterinarians within the Center for Animal Resources and Education at Brown University. These may include but are not limited to:
•Rodent health & colony management: Breeding, weaning, genotyping, and euthanasia while keeping appropriate records.
•Assisting with quarantine and sentinel testing, processing and packing animals for imports and exports.
• Performing health assessments and prescribing appropriate treatments at the direction of the RSM and veterinarian.
•Health monitoring and well-being programs: performing rounds in multiple facilities, observing health status of multiple species and recording findings for vet techs, stocking enrichment devices in multiple locations, preparing and administering enrichment schedules, administering medications, vaccinations, and treatments, collecting lab samples.
•Clinical and research procedures: setting up for animal procedures, preparing surgical packs, transporting animals, observing animals, maintenance of rodent anesthesia machines and rental program, maintaining procedure areas in good condition, providing laundry services as necessary.
Other routine and ad hoc compliance and regulatory matters as directed: Perform census, appropriately label chemicals, assist with paperwork related to compliance documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Required: Associate’s Degree in a related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
1-2 years of experience as a lab technician, veterinary assistant, or similar position in a research or veterinary clinic environment with direct related experience with research animals.
Preferred: AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT or LATG) or Veterinary Assistant certificate from a NAVTA/AVA approved program.
Job Competencies

Good attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with all levels of University personnel.
Basic computer skills.
Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
The ability to adapt to changes that occur with short notice.
Education and Criminal background check required.
