Eligibility: Provo City accepts lateral transfer applications from current police officers in other agencies at any time. Lateral transfers must be currently employed as a certified law enforcement officer, or have been employed as such within the last 18 months; have at least 2 years of certified law enforcement officer experience; and have Utah POST law enforcement officer certification or qualify to be certified as such.

What is the compensation? (placement based on qualifications)

Lateral Transfer Hiring Range: $30.23 - $41.63 per hour

Police Officer (full career series): $28.78 - $45.90 per hour

Lateral appointees receive a $5,000 signing bonus ($2,000 payable at start of employment and $3,000 payable upon completion of the one-year probationary period).

What are the main duties?

  • Enforce all State of Utah, Provo City, and Utah County laws.

  • Respond to life-threatening and property-threatening calls, emergencies, and alarms.

  • Gather and organize intelligence in a logical manner.

  • Arrest suspects by proper and approved methods.

  • Secure crime scenes.

  • Investigate complaints, traffic accidents, and crimes by interviewing suspects, witnesses, prisoners, and victims.

What are the minimum qualifications?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Law Enforcement Officer Certificate by Utah State Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

  • Must be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States who has been in the United States legally for 5 years and has legal authorization to work in the United States.

  • A valid, lawful Driver License.

Lateral transfers may be brought in at the Police Officer II or Senior Police Officer level depending on qualifications.

  • Police Officer II (https://www.provo.org/home/showpublisheddocument/1291/637641112574270000) - In addition to the minimum qualifications above, requires a minimum of two years of law enforcement experience equivalent to the level of a Provo City Police Officer 1.

  • Senior Police Officer (https://www.provo.org/home/showpublisheddocument/1349/638235439825130000) - In addition to the minimum qualifications above, requires a minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience as a Provo Police Officer II OR 5 years of comparable experience as a law enforcement officer. Must also obtain either POST Advanced Officer Training or Provo P.D. Advanced Officer course (or approved equivalent) and have special team assignment experience (Lateral hires have 6 months from hire date to complete certificate and testing requirements).

Lateral appointees may advance further through the Police Officer career series after completion of the one-year probationary period and upon meeting the established advancement criteria in the classification specification below.

What is the selection process?

  • Provo City will certify a list of lateral transfer candidates at the beginning of each month depending on the number of candidates and available positions.

  • Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be screened for any additional requirements and then invited to take the Provo City Police Officer Lateral Transfer Exam.

  • Applicants who score at least 80% on the exam will be advanced to a Command Staff interview.

  • Applicants will subsequently be ranked on the lateral transfer eligibility list based on the combined scores of the exam and interview.

  • Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a background investigation, drug screening, psychological examination, polygraph, and meeting minimum physical standards set by POST.
