Professional Time Type: Full time Position Term: 12 Month Position Details: Summary of Duties: As a member of a cross-cultural team, the Retention Counselor for the Chicanx/Latinx Student Center is responsible for assisting the Office of Multicultural Student Services in carrying out its mission of facilitating "...the best undergraduate experience for multicultural, first generation, and other underrepresented students through the provision of culturally relevant services to enhance their learning and development and foster their successful transition, persistence, achievement, and graduation" from Washington State University. While balancing the academic, cultural and social support for the students, the general responsibilities of this position include academic advising and coaching, mentoring, personal guidance and advocacy, serving as consultant to student leaders and student organizations, and collaborating with a wide variety of university offices and personnel to provide students with comprehensive services to engage them in the pursuit of academic excellence. Required Qualifications: • Positions require a Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. Experience leading or directing the work of others. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. • Evidence of successful experience with programmatic organizational skills; planning, implementation and evaluation. • Demonstrated competency working with students of color; knowledge of and direct experience working with Chicanx/Latinx student populations in the higher education setting. • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of student development, factors impacting the college experience for students of color, and effective academic and mentoring practices. • Demonstrated excellent written communication skills and bilingual skills (English and Spanish). • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and constituents. • Demonstrated familiarity with transition, persistence, achievement, and graduation issues for Chicanx/Latinx student populations. • Understanding of Chicanx/Latinx history, cultural practices, and their experience in higher education settings. • Ability to work with a range of diverse populations including LGBTQ+ and students with access needs using intersectional approaches to support. • The position requires flexibility in work schedule that includes occasional night and weekend work outside of a standard work day. • Demonstrated ability to work with the Microsoft Office Suite of products including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • Understanding and usage of common social media platforms. Preferred Qualifications: • Master's Degree or advanced degree in higher education or related field. • Experience working with undocumented students and students from mixed documented status families in the higher education setting. • Demonstrated supervisory skills; experience facilitating professional development, training, supervision, and evaluation of personnel. • College level experience. • More than two (2) years of professional experience. • Familiarity and experience with populations of color and cultural groups. • Outstanding demonstration of cultural competency and desire for continued learning. • An awarenes
