As a CO+I Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Data Quality and Governance Specialist, you will perform a key role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform.

In this role, you will have an opportunity to shape our team’s best practices, working with our partners: GIS, Azure Networking, Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure, and Datacenter Field Operations teams.

  • This role is located in - Atlanta, GA, Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

  • Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates must ​relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

  • This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to 50%.

Responsibilities

As a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist - Fiber Optic within the Fiber Delivery Engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the quality, integrity and reliability of geographic information system (GIS) data across the AMER region, on Outside and Inside fiber plants, by maintaining the data in the 3GIS system. This role will center on enhancing GIS data quality, collaborating with suppliers and the Central GIS team, and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in partnership with Azure and the global GIS team.

As a successful Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist - Fiber Optic , your responsibilities include:

  • Empower a culture of safety, security, and compliance in all aspects of datacenter activities.

  • Drive a fiber delivery GIS strategy that creates robust and elastic processes and systems, which are scalable in line with Microsoft's growth.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date GIS data related to fiber network infrastructure, by leveraging your deep knowledge of fiber network construction, vaults, and associated components to inform GIS data accuracy.

  • Collaborate with Azure and the global GIS team to ensure consistency and compliance across regions.

  • Implement quality control processes to identify and rectify inaccuracies or inconsistencies in GIS data.

  • Conduct thorough quality assurance inspections of GIS data, either remotely or through site visits.

  • Develop, document, and maintain SOPs for GIS data collection, validation, and governance.

  • Learn, live, and coach the One Microsoft culture and values.  Lead through change by bringing clarity, generating energy, and delivering success.

Critical Skills

  • GIS Proficiency: Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and tools such as 3GIS or similar platforms.

  • Fiber Network Knowledge: Deep understanding of fiber network infrastructure (OSP and ISP), including construction methodologies, components, and terminologies.

  • Data Quality Management: Experience in maintaining and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of GIS data, particularly related to fiber network infrastructure.

  • Project Management: Ability to effectively manage projects related to GIS data quality improvement, including developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

  • Collaboration: Proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams (such as Fiber Delivery Engineers, Azure Networking, and Datacenter Field Operations) and external suppliers to drive GIS data quality initiatives.

  • Quality Assurance: Experience in implementing quality control processes, conducting inspections, and rectifying inaccuracies or inconsistencies in GIS data.

  • Documentation: Documentation skills to develop, document, and maintain SOPs for GIS data collection, validation, and governance.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with stakeholders, report findings, and drive GIS strategy.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree AND 2+ years' experience in Geospatial Sciences, Geography, Engineering, or a related field.

  • OR equivalent experience

  • 1+ year(s) experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

  • 2+ year(s) experience in GIS data management, fiber network construction, fiber planning or related roles.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 4+ years' experience in Geospatial Sciences, Geography, Engineering, or a related field.

  • OR equivalent experience

  • 4+ year(s) experience in GIS data management, fiber network construction, fiber planning or related roles.

  • Experience collaborating with external vendors and suppliers to manage GIS data accuracy.

  • Knowledge and experience developing, implementing custom GIS solutions and workflows to match large scale network build activities

  • Experience with Outside Plant Telecommunications Infrastructure Standards (TIA).

  • Experience managing data-related projects within the telecommunications or cloud services industry. Familiarity with CAD and GIS software (i.e., Esri, ArcGIS, GE, QGIS) for spatial data manipulation and analysis.

Technical Program Management IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
