Burning Man DPW Roadworks Assistant Manager in Reno, Nevada

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Roadworks Assistant Manager will facilitate the construction, maintenance, and strike of the roadways, promenades, plazas, airstrips, service alleys, and thruways of Black Rock City (BRC). They will assist in the performance of daily tasks and logistics associated with the scheduling and operations of the DPW Roadworks Crew, supporting all planning, daily operations, and budget tracking. This role will be required to learn, effectively use, and update existing online systems and documents as needed (e.g. inventory spreadsheets, time logs etc.) to ensure accurate tracking for a successful season.

  This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: 

  • From July - September : Full-Time , Non-Exempt , based in Black Rock City, Nevada .

    DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Daily Operations (60%)

  • Assist in facilitating the planning, construction, and strike of the roads, promenades, plazas, air strips, service alleys, and thruways of BRC.

  • Support and ensure that work is completed in accordance with the design provided by the Burning Man City Planning Committee and the schedule of DPW event operations.

  • With the Roadworks Team, install the T-bar stake intersections and delineating road pegs that determine the arcs of city roads.

  • Coordinate with Water Truck Drivers to facilitate the “driving in” of roads to create a visual indication of roadways to other drivers.

  • Assist in supervising the organization and deployment of orange cones, barricades, and delineators that guide and direct BRC traffic.

  • Assist in overseeing the planning, routing, and implementation of dust abatement services provided by outside vendors.

  • Help to implement the creation of detailed design features of BRC roads as included in the city plan (e.g. flagging the Greeter ingress and exit roads, cutting in the ice corners, flaring the plaza keys, etc.).

  • Work to ensure regular road maintenance and repairs are performed and recorded in a timely fashion.

  • Assist in keeping a basic running inventory of all materials, adding to a post-season final record of inventory.

  • Anticipate the need for, and track the use of, materials and supplies, working with the Roadworks Manager in placing orders for replenishment.

  • Maintain budget awareness as it relates to any orders or needed materials: monies spent, current balance, anticipated costs etc. Proactively discuss any potential adjustments or concerns with Management as soon as possible.

  • Establish and oversee the maintenance of a clean and safe worksite; ensure that all team members are provided with the necessary OSHA approved safety equipment.

  • As needed, submit receipts and any expense reports; ensure forms are complete and submitted on time.

    Personnel Support (20%)

  • Assist in regularly producing comprehensive department and staffing schedules and effectively assign tasks.

  • Attend and support crew attendance to Team Meetings and DPW Morning Meetings. 

  • Help ensure that paychecks are distributed to crew in a timely manner.

  • Monitor personal and crew well-being by setting realistic goals and empowering self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.

  • Be aware of the atmosphere within the crew. Communicate any concerns regarding social climate to the Roadworks Manager and/or City Superintendent.

  • Learn, use, and share the proper pathways of communication for escalating personnel issues. Learn how to and, as needed, create proper supporting documentation regarding such matters.

  • Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job, instructing and sharing skills as necessary.

  • Work with the Roadworks Manager to maintain continuity in what and how work is documented. Ensure that all documentation meets the standards as outlined by management.

  • Commit to improving and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for this role and crew operations throughout the season for accuracy, as requested.

    Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Work with the Roadworks Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.

  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.

  • Prepare post-event written feedback for DPW Management describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement and suggestions for improved efficiency; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.

  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.

  • Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.

    QUALIFICATIONS

      Required

  • Familiarity with the Burning Man event and the event worksite.

  • Able to follow directions, receive and integrate feedback into action, maintain a professional demeanor, and respectfully interface with collaborators.

  • Effective at task switching, with good time-management skills, can evaluate and reprioritize workload as necessary for both self and the team as a whole.

  • Ability to think quickly, problem solve traffic challenges, apply critical thinking to create solutions, and remain calm under pressure; Situationally aware and safety-minded, able to work long hours in extreme conditions.

  • Experience supporting a diverse team with a willingness to promote their strengths and respect their limitations; Ability to lead by example, energize and engage people while still maintaining firm boundaries and adhering to set standards.

  • Operates with behavioral integrity, is organized and detail-oriented, reliable, and fulfills obligations.

  • Capable of safely navigating city streets and access roads that are congested with participants, bicycles, and vehicles.

  • Working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive) and Microsoft Word and Excel. A willingness to learn, use, and routeinly update online tools and documents. Comfortable with proactively asking questions should clarification on how to use an online tool be needed.

  • Clear, service-oriented, and effective communication at all levels (able to adapt style when necessary) , verbally and written. Experienced with using 2-way radios and following radio protocol.

  • Maintains an orderly and respectful demeanor and work-site, providing services with care. 

  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.

  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

    Preferred 

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

    REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

     

    COMPENSATION

    Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From July - September is $15.00 to $17.50 per hour .

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • On-playa:   This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
