Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is the tank farm operating contractor at the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 56 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated organization engineering organization. Engineering at WRPS consists of process engineering, design engineering, nuclear safety, plant/system engineering, construction project engineering, procurement engineering, process and control system engineering, engineering standards/program implementation, and the Chief Technology Office. These areas support all areas of the tank farm mission including Retrievals, Production Operations, Field Projects, Waste Feed Delivery Projects, and long-term innovations.

The Waste Transfer Engineer/Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing technical engineering services in support of Double-Shell Tank (DST) waste transfer activities for the TOC. Waste transfer activities may include DST to DST, 219-S Laboratory to 241-SY Tank Farm, 242-A Evaporator Campaigns, DST waste recirculations, caustic addition to DSTs, Tank Side Cesium Return (TSCR) operations and future transfers between the Waste Treatment Plant and Tanks Farms.

Performs a variety of engineering duties including, but not limited to:

  • developing and approving operating procedures;

  • developing technical evaluations and operability evaluations;

  • maintaining the Safety Equipment Compliance database in SPF (Safety Equipment List and Master Equipment List);

  • performing and/or reviewing calculations (ASME B31.3 for jumper design, pressure and flow transient analysis, etc.);

  • review and approval of Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and Document Change Notices (DCNs) to maintain configuration management;

  • conducting field walk downs;

  • design reviews for projects that modify waste transfer system equipment; and

  • Planning and execution of field work.

The Waste Transfer Engineer/Mechanical Engineer will assume technical responsibility for assigned DST waste transfer activities. When working as lead, provide support to operations to resolve off-normal operating conditions (i.e., material balance discrepancies, equipment operability issues, etc.).

Cooperate with other engineers and subject matter experts performing related phases of the technical work. Coordination with other organizations is essential to ensure all requirements are implemented correctly. Position requires routine interface with Environmental, Radiological Control, Process Engineering, Operations, and Cognizant System Engineering.

Accept the delegated technical responsibility for design, application, and testing for waste transfer systems, materials, equipment or components. This includes updating/maintaining the Safety Equipment Compliance database for all safety-significant waste transfer system components that are needed for DST waste transfer operations.

Interface with Projects to review designs/modifications to the DST waste transfer system. This would include new facilities/processes such as DFLAW, TSCR, TBI, and WTP that will move waste from the DSTs, treat waste, and/or send waste streams back to DSTs.

Prepare technical evaluations/operability evaluations, reports, calculations, ECNs, PMIDs, and operating procedures.

Demonstrates problem-solving skills in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives. Assist in the identification and implementation of transfer efficiencies that can improve how we currently do business and support future company commitments that will require more frequent waste transfer operations.

Conduct field walk downs and investigate engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives and provide recommendations.

Ability to solve highly complex technical issues.

May mentor less experienced engineer.

Required Qualifications

Grade 19

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and

Nine (9) years of related experience

Grade 20:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and

Ten (10) years of related experience

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Grade 21:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and

Twelve (12) years of related experience

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.

Desired Qualifications

Past experience working with waste transfer/piping system.

Nuclear experience.

Good interpersonal and communication skills needed to be able to communicate with personnel, management, and support organizations.

Hiring Range Minimum: $111,588

Hiring Range Maximum: $140,663

Grade 20:

Hiring Range Minimum: $122,813

Hiring Range Maximum: $154,838

Grade 21:

Hiring Range Minimum: $135,188

Hiring Range Maximum: $170,463

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
