This hiring initiative represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic empowered R&D team that applies an understanding of fibers, fiber surfaces, fiber finishes, fabric treatments, polymer science, ingredient chemistry, fiber physical testing and analytical chemistry.

Primary Responsibilities:

As Sr. Scientist , the successful candidate will develop into the technical guardian of fiber and fabric surface treatments including fiber finishes and fabric repellency topical treatments. He or she will define, lead, and execute technical programs focused on fiber surfaces, based on a strong understanding of fundamental scientific principles, improved manufacturing, with a strong understanding of the changing regulatory landscape. They are active members of the broader global technology community within Water & Protection and DuPont and maintain strong connections with chemical suppliers.

More specifically, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing into the technology guardian for fiber spin finishes and fabric repellency treatments that are used in the manufacturing processes.

  • Defining, leading, and executing product and process research and development programs related to the improvement of surface properties of fibers including oil and water repellency, adhesion, and fiber processing.

  • Conducting experimental work and directing experimental work of technical associates assigned to programs.

  • Summarizing and recommending path-forwards based on experimental results.

  • Participating in cross-functional teams, technical and non-technical teams.

  • Partnering with scientists and other engineers to scale processes to commercial production.

  • Partnering with product stewardship and toxicologists to identify needs based on the changing regulatory environment and developing programs related to these regulatory needs.

  • Partnering with external vendors to identify new chemistries key to programs and working with internal team to develop plans for testing.

  • Writing and communicating technical reports and presentations

  • Managing intellectual property (IP); understanding relevant IP and competitive landscapes and actively developing new IP.

This job may require travel up to 25% of work time.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry

  • Strong knowledge in surface science and fiber surfaces.

  • Understanding of chemical principles to be applied to surface modification and fiber properties.

  • Understanding of fiber adhesion to resins.

  • Understanding of analytical techniques used to study organic formulations, fiber surfaces, adhesion, and wetting phenomena.

  • 2-5+ years professional experience, including experience at industrial scale is a plus.
