Become an Energy Trading Senior Advisor at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. This position resides in the Trading and Market Operations (TMO) department within the Energy Procurement & Management (EPM) organization which manages SCE’s $5 billion/year energy resource portfolio. In this job, you will lead the development, implementation, and analysis of SCE’s complex physical and financial trading strategies that manage our energy portfolio. Taking from your past experiences and knowledge in physical power, resource adequacy, and/or emissions, you will ensure compliance with CAISO, CARB, CEC, and CPUC rules and regulations, and support the advancement of SCE’s policy and regulatory positions. You will also pursue technological solutions to optimize our data analytics, operational processes, and risk management. Although this position does not have any direct reports, the expectation is that you will mentor junior team members and make tactical trading and risk management decisions on a daily basis.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • Manage SCE’s Emissions positions (GHG/LCFS)

  • Analyze and measure the effectiveness of existing strategies, processes, methods, tools and market products to pursue improvement opportunities

  • Develop and execute new trading strategies to manage SCE’s short- and intermediate-terms (up to 18 months) physical and financial energy portfolios

  • Ensure adequate power supply to meet system demand during declared system emergencies

  • Maintain and update all associated worksheets, applications, and tools

  • Validate the accuracy and completeness of settlement data, including review of internal calculations

  • Build external business relationships with counterparties, producers, marketers, and brokers

  • Strengthen business relationships with internal leadership/stakeholders

  • Ensure the accurate and appropriate responses to data requests and reports to multiple regulatory agencies

  • Support the team’s other traded commodities, as necessary, to ensure compliance

The essentials

  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in functions related to organized energy markets, energy operations, energy trading, and/or energy risk management

  • Advanced technical skills with Microsoft Excel (e.g., Pivot Tables, VBA)

The preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in economics, finance, accounting, or related field

  • Experience trading and/or scheduling power in WECC

  • Understanding of western carbon markets

  • Experience in the California Independent System Operator

  • Understanding of the regulatory compliance framework an Investor-Owned Utility operates under in California

  • Understanding of mid-office and/or back-office functions

  • Strong familiarity with Energy Trading Risk Management systems

  • Superior analytical and decision-making skills

  • Self-motivated and able to work collaboratively across multiple teams and departments

  • Accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment and to meet daily deadlines

  • Desire to deliver high quality results and work products

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

You should know

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.  Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.
