This positing is for a Transportation Worker III in the Rowan County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. This position will perform manual labor for road maintenance tasks and may operate various pieces of equipment including backhoe, skid steer, dump truck, front end loader, rollers, and other pieces of equipment as needed on the various crews. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, snow and ice removal, inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time, shoveling, raking, and sweeping. Workers in this position will be exposed to all types of weather conditions. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. The TW-3 position is also occasionally tasked with informally supervising 2 or more employees and/or offender laborers in road maintenance activities. POS# 60020719
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as, directing the daily activities of a work crew
Experience in snow and ice removal operations
Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper
Additional Expectations:
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession o a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As s condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
