California Dental Association Insurance Underwriter II in Sacramento, California

Position is mostly remote with occasional in office meetings and trainings. Preference for candidates in the Sacramento region. 

Pay range - $70,000 - $90,000

Responsible for sound decision making regarding risk acceptability by applying underwriting principals through loss exposure analysis. Must have ability to make sounds decisions in the selection, rating, control and servicing of the book of business. Works under the supervision of management within authority granted to maintain profitability and promote growth. Excellent communication and customer services skill are critical. Acts as an internal resource across all TDIC Product Lines; Professional Liability, Employment Practices Liability, Property, General Liability and Workers Compensation.

  • Analyze new business applications, renewal questionnaires and endorsement requests to achieve profitable underwriting results. Determines acceptability of requests through loss exposure analysis.

  • Responsible for the continued growth of the book of business by promptly responding to questions, concerns and complaints from agents, policyholders and internal staff. Must be to work independently and discuss accounts with claims and risk management to obtain additional information about the insured to assess quality of book.

  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, agents, peers and other business contacts and company personnel. Responsible for providing excellent customer service through the daily management of the book, to ensure policy retention.

  • Compiles and interprets data for evaluation of assigned book of business. Responsible for researching, analyzing, reviewing and assisting Senior Underwriter(s) in presenting potential accounts for non-renewal to the TDIC Underwriting Committee. With management guidance, gains exposure to the TDIC Underwriting Committee and the appeal process.

  • Responsible for communicating both verbally and through written correspondence to applicants, policyholders, claims, risk management, state agencies, brokerage staff and others concerning coverage, premium acceptability and policy language. Provides training and acts as a resource to less experienced underwriting staff.

  • Must be able to assist in the training of other departments/companies on an as needed basis through scheduled training sessions or informally through individual questions.

  • Be responsive to policyholder’s questions or request for cover and help to research and develop information on the feasibility of their requests.

  • Under management direction, responsible for researching and analyzing underwriting topics related to state regulatory requirements, the dental practices act and the TDIC policy form, in all states that TDIC writes coverage.

  • Interact with state licensing board to verify status of applicant and policyholders’ state dental licenses.

  • Take continuing education classes to keep agent licenses current. Must maintain familiarity and proficiency while underwriting multi product, multi-state exposures. Must adhere to rules and regulations as filed with each states Department of Insurance. 

  • Responsible for procedural manuals updates.

  • Acts a subject matter expert for Guidewire defect identification, research, and testing. Mentors, trains, and provides direction to underwriting assistants in their daily work activities.

  • Reviews reports and processes changes as needed

  • Ability to maintain accuracy and acceptable department service level standards while maintaining strict compliance to regulatory requirements.

    Non-Essential Functions

  • Represent underwriting in related meetings and seminars, and complete special projects as directed by management.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Required Education, Licenses & Experience

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent industry experience.

  • Property and Casualty License is required. If not held, must be willing to obtain Property and Casualty license.

  • AIS designation required. AU, ARM, RPLU, CPCU in progress of obtaining such designation

  • Must have at least three years of experience in medical professional and/or commercial insurance.

  • Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret policy, procedures and regulations.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in managing own workflow, prioritizing multiple work assignments and resolving questions and problems with management and peers.

  • Ability to perform job duties independently, exercising good judgement and professionalism.
