Job Summary

Edible Campus Gardens ( ECG ) interns will be stewards of the physical garden spaces, support educational offerings, and serve as student representatives for the ECG program and Sustainability Office. The ECG internship is seasonal and takes place in spring, summer, and fall, roughly March-November.

The ECG mission is to engage the campus through garden-based education and urban food production to foster environmental stewardship, community resilience, and belonging on campus. The Sustainability Office empowers students, employees, and the broader community through education, engagement, and collaborative action to build a sustainable future.

Internship goals:

  • Contribute to campus culture of sustainability by interacting with peers, faculty, and staff and discussing ecologically minded agriculture in a positive manner.

  • Support and facilitate educational opportunities.

  • Steward physical garden spaces to maintain spaces which are productive and pleasant.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain physical garden space using ecological gardening techniques. Engage in garden maintenance and related tasks, maintain equipment and storage areas, and follow IPM plan. Complete garden tasks including, but not limited to: weeding, planting, turning soil, working the compost system, harvesting, and delivering harvests.

  • Maintain clear communication with fellow interns, leadership, and volunteers.

  • Safely operate equipment common to the trade

  • Lead and support educational opportunities including, but not limited to: volunteer sessions, garden tours, tabling events, and/or workshops.

  • Record accurate data according to program needs.

  • Follow all guidelines and safety protocols.

  • Self-start projects, identify work to be done within the garden, and follow directions in task management software.

  • Participate in regular team meetings and individual meetings with supervisor.

  • Respectfully engage with the campus community including students, staff, faculty, administrators, and visitors.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Work environment and level of frequency typically required:

  • Able to work safely outside in varied weather conditions: inclement conditions, heat, cold, precipitation, etc.

  • Able to safely and effectively perform all physical tasks essential to the position and understand the physical commitment required for gardening

o Near constant standing, reaching, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching: overhead, at shoulder level, and below shoulder level, gross and fine manipulation, stooping, and both near and far visual acuity

o Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
