Navistar, Inc. Senior HV Battery ESS (Energy Storage System) System Engineer in San Antonio, Texas

Position Overview

Our eMobility Team is growing and we have a great opportunity for a Senior HV Battery ESS (Energy Storage System) System Engineer.

The engineer in this position will help lead development of an externally sourced energy storage system (ESS) solution in addition to working on future internal solutions for the electrification of Navistar commercial vehicles. The engineer role ensures that the ESS integrates with and functions optimally with the vehicle propulsion and auxiliary systems.

This is a hybrid position based in our Rochester Hills, MI, Lisle, IL or San Antonio, TX locations.

Responsibilities

  • Defining and leading Pack requirements and system interactions

  • Support Pack sizing, DFMEA, mechanical, fitment, and thermal system interactions

  • Support battery functional safety, battery controls and specifications

  • Creation and maintenance of complete Design Requirement Documents for HV Energy Storage Systems identifying and taking into account requirements that flow-down from of governmental, regional, industry, and internal Navistar standards, Centers of Excellence, and lessons-learned

  • Creation and maintenance of relevant system interface documents

  • Review of supplier DFMEAs and co-development of HV ESS Functional Safety requirements and system DFMEAs With the Vehicle Performance Integration team, create representative ESS solution usage cases for performance and life assessment

  • Perform preliminary (course/static) ESS sizing estimates for power and energy utilizing supplier and internal test data

  • Generate static power capability maps and energy walks for ESS variants

  • Lead internal and external work-streams to achieve timely execution of program deliverables with good quality

  • Utilize engineering tools and processes to successfully develop and validate hardware and software of the ESS in collaboration with suppliers and internal departments

  • Provide support during vehicle production launch

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 6 years of experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 3 years of experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Navistar does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)

Desired Skills

  • Automotive related engineering degree (Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Aeronautical)

  • Working experience with HV Energy Storage Systems for mobile applications

  • Working experience with relevant industry standards such as SAE J1939, J1772, ISO15118, ISO 26262, etc.

  • Working experience in following automotive product development processes and product production launches preferred

  • Experience or familiarity with engineering tools and software, for example: CANalyzer, Matlab, Polarian, AUROS, XFMEA

  • Strong understanding of basic electrical concepts and computations applicable to batteries

  • DFSS green or black-belt certification preferred
