Commander, Navy Installations MWR Carpenter in San Diego, California

Summary This position is located in the Maintenance Division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department in the Navy Region Southwest. The primary purpose of the position is to construct, alter, maintain and repair buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, and work benches utilizing wood, wood substitutes and composite building materials. Responsibilities Plans and lays out work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction or needed repairs. Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness which require detailed features such as contoured surfaces, inlays and complex joints. Constructs and repairs a wide variety of structural items such as buildings, frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, doors and window frames, interior and exterior trim and miscellaneous items such as counter tops, equipment cabinets and items requiring decorative trim and molding. Selects, cuts, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles wooden materials and parts, using the full range of hand and power tools, machines and techniques to required lengths and dimensions. Installs rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joints, floors, sub-floors, panels, sidings, sheathing, roofing, building paper, insulating materials, door and window frames and interior and exterior trim. Fabricates and installs frames for windows, doors, transoms and ventilators, shelves, counters, plywood ductwork, bulletin boards, cabinets, bookcases, and related features having built-in characteristics. Insures that installed components are level and accurately aligned with other parts of the structure. May be required to install sheet, roll and shingle roofing ensuring proper alignment and overlap. Drives a maintenance truck to and from work sites or dumps. Responsible for maintaining truck and workshop area in a safe and clean manner. Cleans and sharpens tools as needed. Observes fire, driving and security rules and regulations. Conducts periodic inventory of maintenance stock and equipment. Advises supervisor of any problems, and/or potential problem areas. Keeps supervisor informed of any work delays. Submits appropriate paperwork necessary for the purchase of material needed for projects. May be required to perform other maintenance type work as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Three and one-half years of experience in carpentry is desired. Ability to interpret and check plans, blueprints and sketches. Ability to compute, check and ensure the consistency of the dimensions of a number of inter-locking parts; makes templates and patterns; select appropriate machines, tools and techniques. Knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials and construction techniques. Ability to construct, alter, repair and install windows, walls, concrete forms, counter tops and other items. Ability to draw accurate sketches to specifications including accurate measurements. Ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints, use shop mathematics, and lay out such things as angles, arcs and circles. Knowledge, ability and skill in using a wide range of tools and machinery. Knowledge of various properties and characteristics of a variety of wood materials. Ability to communicate effectively with others. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Must have a current driver's license.
