San Diego Humane Society is hiring a full-time Community Initiatives Coordinator for our Community Engagement team!

As part of the larger Community Engagement team, the ideal candidate provides direct service through the Safety Net Foster and Supported Self-Rehoming Programs, advocates for community members and their pets and shares relevant human- and pet-related resources according to identified needs. The intent of this position is connecting community members to resources and breaking down barriers while supporting positive community relations and shelter intake diversion efforts.     What you’ll do:

  • Screens applicants and enrolls pet families in the Safety Net Foster Program, which provides foster care for pet parents going through a period of instability or crisis. Manages a designated caseload of up to 15 pet families including regular communication with participants, Operations teams and foster volunteers to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Coordinates Supported Self-Rehoming Program to serve families facing separation from their pets, including proactive outreach, assistance with creating pet profiles, sharing information and connecting to services aimed at making the pet more adoptable or that will allow the community member to keep their pet.

  • Follows up on assigned department referrals while on site or via phone calls, emails and text messages. Utilizes a personalized problem-solving approach to identify needs and provide information and referrals to appropriate services.

  • Connects community members to SDHS programs and services such as Behavior and Training, Community Pet Pantry, Community Veterinary Program and Vaccination Clinic. Assists community members in overcoming any barriers to accessing services, such as transportation, language or technology.

  • Commutes to various locations throughout San Diego County. May be required to use own vehicle as necessary (reimbursement available for pre-approved business-related travel).

    What we’re looking for:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, coursework in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field preferred.

  • Two (2) years of experience in a position that has involved interacting with diverse communities, providing social services, and handling delicate situations preferred.

  • Lived experience with poverty, housing insecurity or domestic violence preferred.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish required.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.

    The ideal candidate will have personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace – you’re a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker with excellent decision-making, time management and organizational skills including the ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.

    Location: Supporting all campuses, but based at our San Diego Campus. Hybrid work environment which includes onsite work, local offsite events, and work from home opportunities.

    Pay: Starting range is between $20.08 – $22.48 per hour. The actual hourly rate is determined by your related education and experience.
