Product & Data Engineering

The Product & Data Engineering team is responsible for end to end development for Disney’s world-class consumer-facing products, including streaming platforms Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, and digital products & experiences across ESPN, Marvel, Disney Studios, NatGeo, and ABC News. The team drives innovation at scale for millions of consumers around the world across Apple, Android, Smart TVs, game consoles, and the web, with our platforms powering core experiences like personalization, search, messaging and data.

We are making major enhancements to our multi-region, multi-tenant core image service platform to enable all of our brands to have the same dynamic experience. You can be a part of building a unified image service platform that will encapsulate the very best of Hulu and Disney.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

  • Design core, backend software components for the Image Service Platform using a mix of technologies including Scala, Java, Python, Kafka, Kinesis, DynamoDB, MySQL and an array of AWS native services

  • Collaborate with other Image Service engineers and external engineering teams to evaluate and design appropriate solutions to effectively meet Product requirements

  • Build and manage code in AWS using CloudFormation or Terraform

  • Create technical documentation and runbooks for reference and reporting purposes

  • Conduct design and code reviews, analyze and improve efficiency, scalability, and stability of various system resources

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience building internet-scale API or services applications

  • Experience in a Scala and alternative JVM application development environments (Java/Kotlin)

  • Familiarity with the AWS environment, including ECS (Docker), S3, EC2, Lambda, CloudWatch

  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code such as Terraform, CloudFormation

  • Understanding of software development fundamentals

  • Familiarity with writing unit, integration and functional tests

  • Familiarity integrating with service APIs and/or SDKs

  • Understanding of agile processes software team with version control & project management tools (e.g. Github, SVN, Jira, Basecamp)

  • Creative and inventive problem solving

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a team-focused approach towards software development.

Experience with

  • Scala, AWS environment, Java, Python

  • Knowledge of these database solutions, DynamoDB, MySQL/Aurora

  • Experience building scalable, fault-tolerant, high-uptime systems

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience

The hiring range for this position in San Francisco is $123,400 - $165,400 per year, in Seattle is $118,000 - $158,200 per year and in Santa Monica is $112,600 - $151,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
