Ellis Medicine Assistant Director of Environmental Services in Schenectady, New York

SECTION I

BASIC FUNCTION:

The assistant director will provide leadership, direction, and management oversight for continuous improvement of the standard EVS operating model within the facility. Leads all operational coordination under the guidance of the Director of Environmental Services supporting the program for multiple sites. Provides staff leadership, makes sound business decisions in support of the hospital’s mission; and supports the hospital’s vision to be a leader in providing the best facility for patient care, safety, service, and value. Manages the day-to-day operations of the department; ensures a consistently high level of cleanliness and appearance to patients, visitors, and staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Associate degree in business or related field required, Bachelors preferred.

  • 8 years of continuous acute care EVS management level experience accepted in lieu of an associate degree.

  • Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) certification desirable.

  • Five years of leadership and management experience in an Environmental services department within a healthcare setting required.

    SECTION IV:

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 25 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

    SECTION V:

    RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

  • Develops a strategic plan for the department in alignment with the Director of Environmental services and overall organizational plan

  • Develops a departmental mission and vision statement, goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Framed (SMART)), objectives, and scope of services.

  • Monitors key performance improvement activities (e.g., goals, key indicators, data collection, and effectiveness of process change).

  • Establishes a departmental dashboard to track, trend and report KPI’s.

  • Develops a comprehensive waste management program to include, but not limited to goals, operation requirements, reporting procedures, manifests, and documentation for all forms of waste.

  • Conducts performance and disciplinary reviews for all applicable or assigned staff members.

  • Sets the standard for securing cleaning contractors for offsite care buildings to ensure competencies to meet standards and regulations.

  • Oversees performance of all contractors for external care sites where environmental hygiene is performed.

  • Develop, plan, organize, implement, and support Environmental Services operations and provide quality services daily, in accordance with all applicable federal, state and regulatory agencies, Department of Environmental Conservation, TJC, OSHA standards, and health department inspections.

  • Implement and maintain Quality Control and Hazardous Waste program as appropriate and maintain appropriate records, documentation, and audits.

  • Conducts routine inspections of buildings to ensure appropriate cleaning and maintenance is being conducted, and special projects are complete. Oversee and manage all on-site inspections, assisting inspectors and surveyors and provide reports as needed.

  • Develop and maintaining work schedules ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate staffing to ensure effective execution of objectives.

  • Conducts training sessions to ensure that each department member has been properly trained to use all products and equipment as outlined in the Policy and Procedures manuals for Environmental Services.

  • Implements and ensures execution of Quality Management standards and procedures, compiles data and reports to appropriate departments, and governmental agencies.

  • Oversee the purchasing of supplies and equipment, monitors inventory usage, maintenance of equipment and timely repair when failure occurs.

  • Implements safety programs that teach equipment maintenance and accident prevention to ensure:

  • Responsible to ensure that staff adheres to the legal, safety, health, fire, and sanitation codes, by being familiar with fire, safety, and disaster plans.

  • Establish effective relationships with internal customers, hospital department heads, and external agencies providing services to the organization to provide a high level of customer and patient service.

  • Serves as a resource and ensures communication for administration, staff, and company employees by communicating new industry, cleaning, and operational trends.

  • Communication methods include participation on committees and conducting department meetings and training sessions.

  • Contribute to the development and management of the department budget. Create budgetary recommendations to director. Analyze financial data and identify cost savings within the operation. Review and complete variance reports related to productivity and expenses. Maintains records and completes regularly scheduled financial reports to monitor financial results.

  • Provide oversight for overall recruitment and retention, performance management, staff development, career advancement, disciplinary actions, employee training, etc. Conducts performance reviews, High-Middle-Low assessments, and recommends salary adjustments.

  • Demonstrate strong supervisory, leadership, communication, management, and coaching skills, adhere to the Making Ellis Exceptional Standards, and initiate, promote, and support change initiatives.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite required; PM software, and EVS software systems preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to prepare and deliver executive level presentations

  • Achieve and maintain acceptable HCAHPS survey scores as identified by organizational leadership, develop improvement plan to ensure patients' quality of care outcomes and customer satisfaction are met.

Salary Range: $36.07-$54.10/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
