The Hartford is seeking a Managing Attorney for the Arizona Staff Legal Office. This position maintains and grows the presence of Legal Counsel for The Hartford in the local community. The Managing attorney provides leadership of the staff counsel office, builds and maintains partnerships with Claim Centers, provides oversight and guidance on case handling at the local level, and handles a partial caseload. This role is key in driving the strategy to provide excellent results to clients, and in building and maintaining the firm’s reputation of excellence in the local legal community. This individual will lead a 7+ person well-established team including 4 attorneys who handle litigation in the states of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute appropriate uniform office procedures for the receipt and timely assignment of files and timely communications with clients, claims, opposing counsel and the court.

  • Ensure that proper conflict check and calendar systems are in place.

  • Create, revise and ensure the use of uniform legal and administrative forms.

  • Regularly review staff law office files to ensure quality expectations are met, effective legal strategies are identified and updated plans of action are in place.

  • Create and maintain processes to ensure that legal deadlines are met.

  • Actively manage workload demand and capacity across the team.

  • Establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with clients, business partners, counsel, court personnel and office staff.

  • Participate in roundtables, trial calls and training calls.

  • Gather, compile and analyze data from multiple sources and use the data to help drive office results and prepare an office monthly report.

  • Execute key deliverables that improve internal partnerships and support financial goals.

  • Prepare and administer office budget.

  • Identify issues and trends that raise broad client, Claim or corporate implications.

  • Administer performance management process for attorneys and support staff.

  • Provide coaching and feedback to support employee performance and development.

  • Assume proactive, leading role in requisite training of staff on legal issues and goals.

  • Recruit, hire, develop and retain outstanding legal staff and support staff.

  • Promote an inclusive and team-oriented work environment.

  • Maintain vendor management and expense discipline.

  • Directly handle a partial legal file inventory.

    Qualifications:

  • 10+ year’s law practice and business management experience in a large corporate environment. Preferred candidates have both law practice and corporate experience. Member in good standing of the Arizona State Bar or the ability to waive into Arizona.

  • Strong litigation background to include experience and proficiency in commercial and general liability, subrogation, auto liability matters, and complex litigation. Workers Comp experience attractive but not necessary.

  • Functional understanding of claims and litigation.

  • Trial experience in tort litigation preferably in the field of insurance defense (jury and bench trials).

  • Demonstrated leadership ability and a successful track record managing a team.

  • Ability to influence and communicate across all levels of the organization. 

  • Strong communication and computer skills.

  • Strong leadership experience.

  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

    Location:

The Managing Attorney may work remotely from locations in the Tucson/Phoenix corridor. If the Managing Attorney resides within 25 miles from the Arizona Legal Office location, the Managing Attorney will be required to go into the office up to 3 times per week. If the Managing Attorney resides more than 25 miles from the Arizona Staff Legal Office location, they will be required to go into the office up to 4 times per month.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$141,920 - $212,880
