The Husky Union Building (HUB) serves as the center of the UW community life and enhances the student experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. The HUB is a department, and building and a program, all at the same time. Our services and activities provide the opportunity to balance course work and free time in the Husky Experience.

The HUB has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director For Communications and Development. The purpose of this position is to promote the leadership and community offerings and benefits of engaging in co-curricular and leadership activities at the University of Washington, with students as the primary focus. This position provides marketing, advancement, and assessment oversight across all units of the department. The priority of this role is to promote the programs and services available at the HUB to the UW students. Developing resources (i.e., human and financial) are the secondary objectives.

Promising candidates will possess a passion for working in a student-centered environment with a student development theory-driven practice, fostering student success through teaching and learning, and possess the ability to make sound administrative decisions through collaborative processes to advance the HUB’s mission and strategic goals. This position reports to the Executive Director and serves as a member of the Director’s Senior Leadership Team. It interacts with department staff and students on all initiatives related to communications/marketing, fundraising, department event planning and execution, and assessment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Communications and Marketing (30%)

  • Develop and oversee the HUB’s marketing strategies to promote all programs and services offered to students and the UW community.

  • Develop content, ensure consistent and effective messaging, and produce promotional collateral in various formats, such as web, digital publications, brochures and signage.

  • Oversee the HUB’s social media accounts.

  • Develop and implement branding strategies.

  • Serve as a resource to peers within the department and throughout the HUB to develop and execute effective communications and marketing strategies. Further support peers in developing the skills to tell the story of the HUB and promote their programs and services on-brand; identify opportunities and provide coaching and resources.

  • Develop and oversee the department and HUB facility’s internal communications plans.

  • Jointly develop and coordinate a HUB tenant program to support the resident offices.

  • Primary contact and oversight of all department marketing efforts, providing direct support to all HUB unit lead managers.

  • Serve as departmental contact for campus outreach events to promote HUB offerings and activities. Event Planning and Execution (30%)

  • Oversee all HUB-initiated student engagement programs.

  • Lead brainstorming, planning, budgeting, promotion, day-of event management, and assessment.

  • Manage contracts, vendor relationships, purchasing and risk management for HUB-initiated events.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with campus departments to promote and execute programs and events.

  • Plan, promote, and execute alumni/student leader fundraising events to raise funds for the HUB Excellence in Student Leadership Scholarship. Supervision (20%)

  • Select, train, supervise and evaluate one full-time professional staff: Assistant Director for Games.

  • Select, train, supervise and evaluate 4-6 student employees who are responsible for content creation and marketing materials.

  • Select, train, supervise and evaluate 1 Graduate Intern with a focus on transfer student engagement. Advancement (10%)

  • Direct oversight of the HUB Excellence in Student Leadership Scholarship program.

  • Organize and co-direct HUB fundraising efforts to build capacity for programming and student scholarships.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with alumni through individual outreach and targeted communications.

  • Work closely with Student Life advancement team on projects and initiatives.

  • Manage Husky Giving Day initiatives for the HUB.

  • Seek funding from outside sources – private, foundation, sponsorships, etc. Department Executive Leadership (10%)

  • Functional oversight of HUB Games, UW Esports and HUB IT units.

  • Member of the Executive Director’s Senior Leadership Team engaged in department-wide decision making regarding strategic planning, budgeting (overall $6M budget), and policy development/interpretation/enforcement.

  • Budget manager for Communications & Marketing units.

  • Manage facilities assessments and data collection, including updates to professional association benchmarking, semi-annual administration of the Skyfactor survey, and daily traffic counts.

  • Compile the department’s Annual Impact Report.

  • Ex-Officio member of the HUB Board of Representatives. IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY The Associate Director is a highly visible member of the HUB Executive Director’s Leadership Team, often collaborating with other departments on- and off-campus and in frequent contact with students. POSITION COMPLEXITIES Candidates will possess an in-depth knowledge of student development, event planning, marketing and advancement best practices, University policies, procedures and protocols, and state/federal/local laws as they apply to the HUB. Candidates will be a strategic leader and contributing member of a team, manage projects and people with the highest level of integrity, display an extreme attention to detail, and have a proven track record of developing and executing a strategic vision in a student-centered environment. SUPERVISION

  • This position reports to and works under the general supervision of the HUB Executive Director. SUPERVISIORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the selection, training, mentoring, supervision and evaluation of 1 full-time professional staff, 4-6 student employees and a graduate intern.

  • Second-level supervision of 2 full-time staff, and 15 student employees, 4 Esports coaches and 10 volunteers WORKING CONDITIONS This is an overtime exempt position. Position is responsible to work independently with minimal oversight from the Executive Director to lead their unit. Occasional evening and weekend hours to manage events will be required. Schedule can be flexible and allows some hybrid/work from home days after onboarding, with the on-site job hours being performed in an office setting and sometimes on-site event management which can be indoors or outdoors. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Business or a related field.

  • 3 years’ related experience as a professional in the fields of Higher Education, College Unions/Student Activities, Non-profit Management, or related field. ADITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Professional experience as the lead in event planning and execution.

  • Experience leading advertising and direct marketing efforts in service environment.

  • Demonstrated ability in leading and developing teams and managing multiple on-going, simultaneous projects.

  • Experience supervising and developing full time staff.

  • Possess interpersonal, problem solving, and customer service skills to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and colleagues.

  • Ability to write reports, analyses and evaluations.

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare, manage and control annual operations budgets.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Business or a related field.

  • 4+ years of related experience as a professional in the fields of Higher Education, College Unions/Student Activities, Non-profit Management, or related field.

  • Working knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling and web production, including Adobe Creative Suite and web content management systems.

  • Professional experience leading advancement/development campaigns in education or the private sector.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise part-time student employees.
