The Abitua lab currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Lab Manager, Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE). We are a growing lab studying the evolution of novel cell types and cell behaviors in annual killifish, whose embryos adapted to an extreme environment. The successful candidate will be an active and engaged member of this thriving research team. Working with Dr. Abitua, they will manage the lab’s vivarium, operating aquarium equipment, and maintaining life-feed stocks and breeding colonies of annual killifish and zebrafish for embryonic studies. They will also act as lab manager, directing purchasing, organizing critical lab functions and assisting with strategic decision-making. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently and taking on leadership roles. The Abitua lab is strongly committed to equity and diversity. The Department of Genome Sciences, part of the University of Washington School of Medicine, focuses on answering critical scientific questions by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches. In particular, we are making major contributions in the application of genomics to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and wellbeing. Genome Sciences boasts a collaborative, integrated environment supported by a diversity of academic disciplines. We also work with a multitude of others both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has been highly successful, expanding since its beginning in 2001 to 63 training, teaching, and research faculty with annual grant awards of $63M in FY23.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Research (50%):

  • Development of transgenic lines (design, injection, and line maintenance).

  • Perform genotyping of transgenic lines.

  • Optimize protocols for killifish.

  • Perform standard developmental biology and molecular biology experiments.

  • Analyze data and troubleshoot experiments.

  • Provide written and oral status reports to Dr. Abitua.

  • Participate in lab meetings, including presentation of work.

  • Contribute to publications and grant writing.

  • Collaborate with undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs.Vivarium operations and animal husbandry (30%):

  • Maintain and operate the lab’s vivarium.

  • Care for and maintain fish colony.Lab Management (20%):

  • Ensure lab documentation and protocols are up to date and compliant with university and national guidelines.

  • Train and help to manage new lab members.

  • Manage lab purchasing, safety and organization.

  • Provide written and oral status reports to Dr. Abitua.

  • Perform related duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology or a related field.

  • One year of related laboratory experience.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience working with fish models

  • Experience with contemporary molecular biology and genomics experimental approaches.

  • Experience with lab management, or a strong motivation to move into this role.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Outstanding academic and professional track record.

  • Innovative and analytical thinker, with a disciplined and organized approach.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an interest in collaborative work.

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and driven to grow. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with vertebrate models, ideally fish.

  • Experience with genome engineering and genotyping.
