In the 2022 fiscal year, UW Medicine Advancement raised $284 million in gifts and private grants (46 percent of the University of Washington’s total) from nearly 14,000 donors to support the mission of UW Medicine.

The Senior Director for Collaborative Fundraising Strategy (Development Director - Senior) reports to the Associate Vice President for Strategic Planning, Operations and Campaign (Associate Vice President) and is accountable for many aspects of UW Medicine’s advancement program. The Senior Director will play a critical role managing and enhancing fundraising partnerships with a variety of affiliated parties, both within and outside of the University. The Senior Director will provide leadership and tactical direction and will consult and advise UW Medicine’s leadership and Advancement colleagues to promote and facilitate the overall success of these partnerships.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Senior Director provides leadership and strategic direction for the following areas and activities:

Intra-Institutional Fundraising Partnerships (60%)

  • In partnership with UW Medicine Advancement leadership, establish and implement goals, objectives, and strategies that support the success of key fundraising partnerships between UW Medicine and affiliated or external parties, including future partnerships. Active fundraising partnerships currently include:- Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center- Partner universities throughout the WWAMI region- Seattle Children’s- Harborview Medical Center

  • Analyze partnership structures and develop and implement innovative strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Provide comprehensive support to the advancement team, UW Medicine Leaders (e.g. Hospital CEOs, Department Chairs, Vice Chairs, and administrative support teams) and donors. This includes leading regular trainings and updates on progress, providing customer service to UW constituencies impacted by the fundraising partnerships, and providing strategic support to inform collaborative gift conversations.

  • Serve as the primary liaison to external partner fundraising teams and represent UW Medicine Advancement in a variety of regular and ad hoc meetings.

  • Support external partner fundraising teams in identifying and coordinating philanthropic priorities at their partner institutions that also support the work of UW and UW Medicine.

  • Serve as the primary liaison to UW School of Medicine faculty supported by external partner fundraising teams on questions related to philanthropic support for their work.

  • Serve as the primary liaison to internal UW Medicine Advancement fundraisers coordinating donor strategies for donors who support both UW and our partner institutions.

  • Oversee all financial structures necessary to implement the fundraising partnership including forecasting, program performance, funds transfers, and counting of philanthropic support.

  • Regularly update UW Medicine Leadership on the success of the partnerships and identify opportunities for improvements. Lead implementation of any needed updates to fundraising agreements and operating procedures.

  • Represent UW Medicine Advancement in the development of any future fundraising partnerships; draft, edit and advise on future agreements and lead all aspects of the operational implementation of the partnership. (e.g. Data and Reporting, Communication Strategies, Gift Acceptance, Stewardship, and Training).

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of UW Medicine’s evolving strategic plan to support UW Medicine’s mission to improve the health of the public.Fundraising Policy and Procedures (25%)

  • Develop and maintain an inventory of all University policies and procedures that impact philanthropy. (Note: HR policies and procedures are managed by a separate team).

  • Serve as the primary liaison with cross-campus partners to ensure policies and procedures remain accurate and relevant.

  • Identify opportunities and gaps in existing policies and procedures and make recommendations to UW and UW Medicine leadership for improvements.

  • Lead creation, review, and training for any new or updated UW Medicine Advancement policies and procedures.

  • Serve as the primary liaison with University partners, such as the Office of Research, UW Medicine Compliance, the UW Medicine Business Unit, University Advancement operational teams to find resolutions to gift acceptance and administration challenges.

  • Identify strategies to improve collaboration across the team and across campus, and lead implementation of new strategies.

  • In partnership with the Engage Team responsible for grateful patient technology and training, ensure compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements.University-wide Fundraising Initiatives (10%)

  • In partnership with the Assistant Vice President for Campaign, support UW Medicine’s representation and success in University-wide fundraising initiatives.

  • Oversee, document, and implement any infrastructure and administrative enhancements needed to support these fundraising initiatives. This could include advising on fundraising and financial structures, funds transfers, reporting, and stewardship.Other Duties (5%)

  • Represent UW Medicine on related committees and ensure compliance with University and UW Medicine procedures and policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President, UW Medicine Advancement. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • BA/BS in liberal arts, communications, business or science.

  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in institutional advancement with substantial experience in donor relations, data management, project management, and annual giving.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated success as a charismatic and effective leader with the ability to anticipate, develop and effectively communicate long-term vision, values and strategies that focus and drive the creative energy of the organization.

  • A proven commitment to higher education with an extensive knowledge and experience in fundraising, fundraising principals and/or industry trends.

  • Experience in synthesizing information to balance the interests of multiple parties and act in a decisive and timely manner.

  • The ability to work with various constituents including internal and external partners and donors to define and articulate UW Medicine’s image and priorities.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with the executive leadership team at UW Medicine Advancement and experience working with senior administrative leadership, including the CEO and their executive team.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation. Poised, professional manner and the ability to communicate clearly, directly and empathetically in all interactions: verbal and written communications, one-on-one conversations and in groups, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively and skillfully engage others in ways that help resolve differences, manage conflicts and build consensus, all with the best interests of the organization in mind.

  • Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations, exercise good judgment based on information and analysis in a fast-paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment in an organized and professional manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidences and protect confidential information.

  • Ability to act in a selfless manner and model ethical values of UW Medicine.

  • Equivalent education/experience may substitute for stated requirements. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience developing and implementing legal agreements, policies and procedures in higher education, particularly in a hybrid (centralized/de-centralized) advancement structure.

  • Success personally building relationships with faculty partners and soliciting major gifts from individuals and/or organizations.

  • Project management training and/or legal training. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
