Port of Seattle Veterans Fellow - Engineering Emergency Response Plan Coordinator in Seattle, Washington

Some of what you'll be doing:

The Port of Seattle is committed to assisting military personnel departing active-duty service transition to civilian employment. The Veteran's Fellowship Program is designed to provide short term (6 months) employment that will assist veterans selected for the program in the following areas:

  • Identifying transferrable skills

  • Exposure to a civilian work environment

  • Career assistance

  • Exposure to corporate business practices

  • Mentoring

  • Resume and interview assistance

In this role, you will lead a project to update and advance the Engineering-lead but Port-wide Damage Assessment Plan (DAP), which guides our infrastructure response team in emergencies such as, but not limited to, earthquakes. This will also include advancement of team training materials and development and leading of exercises. You will work to directly support the Port’s ability to respond to and recover from an infrastructure emergency.

  • You will update and further develop the Damage Assessment Plan and its appendices reflect the current assets, staff, and organization

  • You will develop tools and processes for its effective implementation

  • You will develop online on-demand refresher training for Damage Assessment Team (DAT) members and live training for introduction. The DAT is made of cross-departmental Port staff with infrastructure technical knowledge from many different perspectives. It is not the core work of any one person’s job, but rather a responsibility that individuals take on in uncommon circumstances.

  • You will develop materials and run live exercises for Damage Assessment Team members and Damage Assessment Supervisors to drill elements of the DAP process.

  • You will coordinate with other departments to understand their needs for damage assessments and recovery, as well as to raise their awareness of the processes.

  • You will perform other duties as assigned.

Who you are:

  • A Veteran – You have a minimum of three (3) years of active duty or mobilized reserve duty service in a branch of the U.S. Military Service (which includes the United States Coast Guard). Documentation of an honorable discharge from active or reserve status must be presented as part of the application process. Veterans Fellowship applicants must be within twenty-four (24) months of discharge to apply for a fellowship unless they have not worked full-time since their discharge and have been a full-time student in a degree or certification program since their discharge.

  • Desired – We hope you have one year of experience in emergency preparedness and response. We also hope you have experience in infrastructure or engineering related work and experience leading/training teams.

  • Knowledgeable – You have a basic understanding of emergency response processes and development and/or implementation of emergency responses. You also have basic knowledge of infrastructure such as electrical, mechanical, structural, civil and/or architectural elements of buildings, utilities, and/or docks.

  • Coordinator – You know how to pull together diverse teams of various expertise in order to complete activities and work together towards a common goal.

  • Trainer – You possess the skill to effectively lead training sessions and exercises to impart information to large groups.

What else you need to know:

  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.

  • Work Environment – This work will take place in a hybrid/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.

  • Limited Duration - This is a limited duration position and is expected to last no longer than six months.

  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.

  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you will/must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.

  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
