DEPARTMENT:Public Works

FLSA STATUS:Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO:PW Superintendent

Including: Motor Grader Operator, Truck Driver, Equipment Operator, Mechanic, Mechanic Assistant, Seasonal/Permanent Right of Way Mower, and all other duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT OPERATION:

Operate pick-up trucks, motor grader, vibratory roller, front end loader, backhoe, track hoe, tractor, bulldozer, dump truck, semi-trucks with belly dump or low-boy trailers, asphalt machine, wood chipper, lawn mower, hydraulic excavator and other equipment as assigned for the maintenance and construction of drainage systems, roadways and bridges.

EQUIPMENT CHECK OUT/ PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Check tires, fluid levels, leaks, noises, batteries, belts, gauges, blades and radios. Add fluids as needed. Report any repair or service that may be needed.

Mechanic: Perform tune-ups on any and all equipment as needed.

GENERAL

May assist in emergencies, snow removal, etc. Assist Mechanic in equipment maintenance, metal fabrication and welding. Deliver grader blades to Rural Operators. Blow out radiators in the field. Perform shop maintenance, building and ground maintenance as needed. Assist crew in the yard for loading and unloading materials. Perform general utility work and all other duties as assigned.

REPORTS AND RECORDS

Keep accurate records of time worked, areas worked in, jobs performed, and materials used. Mechanic responsible for keeping records of service and repair requests. Maintain such other records as required.

SAFETY

Operate equipment or do assigned work in crews or alone, observing safety rules in operating heavy equipment or in driving a load that could result in personal injury. Emphasize safety on equipment and vehicle operation, traffic control, lifting or any other work that could result in personal injury. Observe the Chautauqua County and department safety policies and use common sense practices. Wear protective equipment as required in safety manuals and other directives.

ROADWORK

Perform general laborer duties related to road work such as flagging traffic, trimming trees, cutting brush, grass and weeds, replacing traffic signs and clearing road right of ways. Deliver and spread gravel, rock and sand to areas as assigned. Performs maintenance work such as mowing road ditches, patrolling, grading and leveling roads and pulling ditches. Other related duties as deemed necessary or required.

BRIDGE WORK

Perform general labor duties related to bridge construction or repair such as patching bridge surfaces, replacing bridge planks, setting forms for concrete and flagging traffic. May deliver and spread gravel to assigned areas. May operate equipment to assist in bridge work such as the hydraulic excavator or bulldozer. May perform other work related to bridge work as assigned such as placing weight limit signs.

ASPHALT WORK

Perform general labor duties related to asphalt work and preparation for asphalt work. Perform general clean-up and flagging. May operate equipment to assist in asphalt work such as dump truck, patching machine, vibratory roller, or motor grader. May preform other work related to asphalt work as assigned.

CULVERT MAINTENANCE/INSTALLATION AND DITCH CLEANIG

Operate equipment to improve drainage and repair, replace or install new corrugated metal pipe or concrete culverts. Deliver and spread gravel, rock and sand to areas as assigned.

EQUIPMENT REPAIR

Mainly Mechanic/ Mechanic Assistant

Obtain diagnostic information from the equipment operator. Perform tests and determine what parts need to be repaired or replaced. Inspect, diagnose and repair the electrical and echanical systems of automotive equipment, heavy trucks and construction equipment. This includes fuel, exhaust, brake and cooling systems, gasoline, and diesel engines, transmission, hydraulic and all other mechanical systems. Test machinery for proper operation after work is completed. Obtain verification from operator that problem is corrected.

Assists with oil change schedules, service vehicles and yard equipment for preventive maintenance including oil change, lubrication, and filter change. Report any potential mechanical problems to Mechanic. Remove, repair and remount tires in shop and in the field on all types of equipment. Perform minor repair tasks including shocks, lights and tune-ups, liquid hoses and others assigned. Wash equipment. Keep wash area clean.
