The Role – Head of BD&L, South Korea

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Overall intent of the BD&L organization: Within BI’s Human Pharma BD&L organization, work closely with Transactions & Contract Management(T&CM) and Alliance Management (AM) to ensure flawless execution on accessing external innovation to strengthen BI’s portfolio.

  • For the role of Head of Business Development & Licensing, Transactions & Contract Management(T&CM) this means - The primary purpose of this role is to

  • Identifying and establishing external collaborations for core areas of BI and establish partnerships together with global BD&L and Discovery Research’s therapeutic areas (TA) teams

  • Update partnering strategy based on emerging science/technolgies related to core TA, with special focus in South Korea.

  • In close collaboration and alignment with TA representatives execute on partnering strategy for a given TA / focus area and in line with this strategy, identify, scientifically evaluate, and advance to negotiation and ultimately deal signature selected external innovation opportunities.

  • Select and prioritize these opportunities in accordance with BI’s portfolio needs, priorities, financial expectations, and other key terms in an industry-competitive manner, globally and across the entire R&D value chain

  • Perform preliminary scientific analyses for licensing projects, evaluating the range of available data at a given stage to profile external product candidates, including characterizing external organizations under consideration as potential candidates.

  • Initiate close interactions with BI stakeholders outside the department (e.g. DR, Development, TMCP/Medical, IPM, Legal, Patents, Finance) and external partners from academia, biotech and pharmaceutical companies to drive access to external innovation and successfully close partnering relationships that are in focus for BI’s partnering strategy.

  • Represent BD&L function in South Korea as well as BI’s first contact to potential external partners and drives BI’s global visibility efforts and networking in South Korea.

  • Establish biotech network for BI in Seoul and develop networking strategies for South Korea.

  • Lead the effort on organizing BI “Grass roots innovation” events in South Korea including BI office hours, BI academy, BI innovation prize and Partnering day.

  • Develop BI internal network with BI teams accessing external innovation

Requirements

  • Requires advanced scientific degree (Ph.D. or MD degree in biology, pharmacology, or chemistry). Preferred candidate shall hold a PhD degree from well-renowned institute.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the drug discovery and pharmacology in pharmaceutical industry, preferably with 3-5 years of experience in licensing or business development activities or a technology leadership position. Successful scientific track record and signed deals and a high level of professional credibility.

  • Requires the ability to lead the development and implementation and execution of an investment thesis, from the earliest stage deals to clinical candidates and commercial opportunities.

  • Strong scientific credentials are an imperative in an area of interest for BI. Requires the ability to lead and participate in interdisciplinary strategy teams on both local and international levels

  • Excellent communication in Korean and English, management and organizational skills.

  • Well-developed business acumen directly through industry licensing or strategic planning experience.

  • Demonstrated set of skills that includes previous scientific experience leading strategic thinking, implementation of research plans, prioritization and budget management.

  • High energy level questioning and challenging mind set capable of distilling large data sets to make recommendation with regard to investments in targets, clinical medicines and marketed products in the therapeutic area.

  • Excellent project management skills and problem-solving ability.

  • Self-motivated, proactive style required to represent BI in many public venues but also a team player and supportive of others within the global BD&L organization.

  • Requires the familiarity and understanding of patents and legal concepts in contracts as well as understanding their implications in the context of an in-license.
