Position Summary: The Dean of Students is responsible for promoting a positive school culture and climate by overseeing student discipline, attendance, and overall student well-being. This role involves working collaboratively with teachers, staff, parents, and students to support academic success and personal growth. The Dean of Students implements policies and programs that foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Discipline and Behavior Management:
- Develop and enforce school-wide discipline policies and procedures.
- Handle disciplinary issues, including investigating incidents, determining consequences, and maintaining detailed records.
- Provide guidance and support to teachers on classroom management and student behavior strategies.
- Implement restorative justice practices and conflict resolution programs to address behavioral issues.
Attendance and Truancy:
- Monitor and improve student attendance rates.
- Work with families, teachers, and community resources to address chronic absenteeism and truancy.
- Implement programs and initiatives to encourage regular school attendance.
Student Support and Well-being:
- Develop and oversee programs that promote student mental health, social-emotional learning, and overall well-being.
- Coordinate with school counselors, social workers, and external agencies to provide support services to students in need.
- Facilitate workshops and training sessions for students on topics such as bullying prevention, substance abuse, and healthy relationships.
School Culture and Climate:
- Promote a positive and inclusive school culture through events, programs, and initiatives.
- Lead efforts to improve student engagement and school spirit.
- Support the implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, and staff.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences, school board meetings, and other school events.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to address student needs and promote a cohesive school community.
Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate records of student discipline, attendance, and other relevant data.
- Prepare reports for school administration, district officials, and other stakeholders.
- Assist with the development and implementation of school policies and procedures.
Professional Development:
- Stay current with best practices in student discipline, attendance management, and student support services.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and training sessions.
- Lead professional development for staff on related topics.
