CITY OF ST GEORGE Recreation Specialist - Water Safety Instructor in ST GEORGE, Utah

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Recreation Manager -Aquatics, conducts swimming instruction using the

American Red Cross Learn to Swim program.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may

include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only

  1. Ensures safety of the students at all times.

  2. Follows and teaches according to the Red Cross lesson standards. Creativity and different styles of

teaching are permitted and encouraged as long as appropriate level skills are taught.

  1. Starts and ends classes according to established schedules which requires instructors to be available 15

minutes prior to scheduled class.

  1. Ensures that all equipment is out and ready prior to class start.

  2. Provides parents with updates, as requested, regarding child's progress.

  3. Instructs all lessons with safety first in a manner beneficial to students progression.

  4. Maintains accurate records of attendance and skill accomplishment which is completed after every

class.

  1. Completes certificates prior to the final session of each class.

  2. Completes Course Records with American Red Cross.

  3. Required to be in water while teaching.

  4. Attends scheduled meetings with management and staff.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Frequently required to walk, stand, sit and to talk or hear. Occasionally required to use hands to finger,

handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; to reach with hands and arms; and to climb or balance,

stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must also be able to project voice over the noise of the pool so that class

participants are able to hear the instructions. Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and pool

mechanical systems. Occasionally exposed to wet and dry conditions, fumes, toxic, or caustic chemicals.

Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office and loud when in the facility.

 

Note: Individuals in this position must wear suitable teaching attire that is not distracting for students, which

for females mandates an athletic one piece suit and suitable swimming trunks for males.

Qualifications

Licenses and/or Certifications:

• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification must be obtained within 60 days of hire and

maintained throughout employment. Certification will need to be obtained before the employee can be

scheduled to work as a Water Safety Instructor. (Employee will not be compensated for time spent

obtaining certification.)

• Must be Workplace CPR/AED, First Aid certified within 60 days of hire, which must be maintained

throughout employment. (Employee will not be compensated for time spent obtaining certification.)

Knowledge of:

• Facilities' rules and regulations.

• Facilities' Emergency Action Plan.

Skills:

• Highly motivated.

• Customer service oriented and excellent public relations skills.

• Must be able to work and communicate effectively with children and youth.
