Department Introduction:

The LBRE Safety Office is a team of dedicated professionals who assist employees with reducing health and safety risks associated with their work. We coach and train employees to integrate practical health and safety principles and compliance obligations into all aspects of our business so we can continue to remain the operational core of the University’s 8100-acre campus where advancements across the academic spectrum are continually made possible.

Job Purpose:

Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.

On-site work will be required for an initial 3–6-month period, with the possibility of transitioning to a hybrid model thereafter. Employees may be required to work on-site for a minimum of 3 days per week, or more as needed to support operational requirements, subject to manager approval.

Core Duties*:

  • Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the University's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.

  • Manage the safety inspection program and train supervisors and designated inspectors.

  • Develop and implement a safety coaching program reinforcing safe practices, building the LBRE culture of safety.

  • Establish and manage contractor and/or consulting contracts to support required safety activities (e.g., quarterly rigging inspections and compliance, etc.)

  • Manage initiative implementations such as safety training reporting dashboards; STARS Track auto-assignment and curriculum set-up; electrical safety and LOTO training logistics, etc.

  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate safety training and educational materials following adult learning principles.

  • Coordinate and manage emergency preparedness activities and/or assurance and accreditation programs. (e.g., confined space rescue drills, rigging and fall protection hardware inspections, etc).

  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.

  • Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace to determine root causes and preventive measures.

  • Follow up on corrective actions to closure.

  • Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential.

  • Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain a working knowledge of specific government regulations.

  • May act as a lead or technical expert and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.

  • Support outreach and wellness activities, including communications, events, training, and/or seminars.

  • Develop and maintain the safety website and other media channels.

  • Plan, prioritize, and problem-solve based on leading indicator trends and upcoming work.

  • Recommend improvements in complex processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potentials.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with a proven ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and accurately.

  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software, Google Suite, and email applications. Ideally, the candidate has demonstrated experience of advanced Excel, Power BI, and/or Smartsheets.

  • Critical thinking skills and a natural curiosity, able to analyze complex problems and continuously seek innovative solutions and process improvements.

  • Ability to intervene in safety-related situations in a constructive way.

  • Ability to imagine the world from another person's perspective and consider how their actions will affect others.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • At a minimum, Associate Safety Professional (ASP).

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Use a mobile telephone.

  • Kneel, crawl, walk on uneven surfaces, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.

  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.

  • May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals

  • May access confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.

  • May work early mornings, weekends, or as the need arises.

Working Conditions:

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.

  • May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals

  • May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.

The expected pay range for this position is $99,000 to $123,000 per annum.
