Behind the scenes, but ahead of the curve: help us develop the next-generation public broadcaster.

Created to align, lighten and modernize infrastructure, the Technology and Infrastructure (T&I) team is the backbone and the future forward arm of CBC/Radio-Canada. We are the people that make stuff work. We make connections; between media content, systems, people and places. We are the space in between.

A place with purpose. CBC/Radio-Canada has always been a highly-regarded pioneer of media technology. Not just in Canada, but around the world. Today, we’re transforming ourselves from a conventional radio and television broadcaster into a modern digital media company. Technology is the driving force. T&I is the team making it happen.

Your role

We are looking for a systems administrator with experience managing Microsoft Windows and Linux servers in an enterprise environment to join the System Operations team. Under the supervision of leadership, our sysadmins are responsible for and contribute to the design, implementation, management and maintenance of CBC/Radio-Canada's core computing and storage platforms. In this role you will help us manage core network services such as DNS & DHCP, identity and Active Directory providing a stable and reliable platform for critical business applications and media infrastructure.

The successful candidate will play an important role in the planning and execution of changes as we migrate our operations to our newly built data centre in our Toronto facility. You will work directly with internal partners and vendors to ensure the successful completion of project deliverables. Beyond contributing to specific projects, the candidate will also act as an internal systems expert, providing training and guidance to colleagues and internal partners.

As a member of the System Operations team, supporting the national public broadcaster, you may occasionally be required to work irregular hours due to emergencies, planned maintenance and special events based on our broadcasting schedule and operational needs.

Your challenge

The successful candidate will join a team of experienced systems administrators based in Toronto & Montreal, who are responsible for managing systems across Canada and at international bureaux. We provide 24/365 coverage for key services and act as an escalation point for other teams in our areas of expertise. Experience with scripting and automation tools will be a strong asset and good personal time management and strong communication skills are essential to success in this fast paced hybrid environment.

As the successful candidate, you will be called upon to identify opportunities for improvement, to implement solutions to routine problems and requests, and to support and share knowledge with your colleagues. Achieving these objectives in a collaborative manner, you will prioritize clear communication within and between technology teams and ensure regular updates to documentation and work instructions used in your daily work and by your colleagues.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

A university degree or demonstration of equivalent professional experience.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an expert level knowledge of operating system architecture and usage (Linux, Microsoft Windows) and a solid understanding of systems administration challenges and best practices in a corporate computing environment.

This role requires intermediate to advanced scripting skills and team members are encouraged to develop their skills in automation and systems programming. Current experience with PowerShell and BASH is strongly preferred and regular use of these skills will be required for the successful performance of this role.

The candidate will be expected to plan and write documentation for new systems and to update and maintain work instructions and “cheat sheets” to be used by other members of the team.

Familiarity with the use of VMware as a systems administrator and a working knowledge of common storage technologies are necessary to effectively collaborate with other members of the System Operations team and work independently. Experience with Red Hat OpenShift in an enterprise environment is an asset. Training opportunities will be available to develop and expand these skills.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to demonstrate a minimum of 4 years of professional experience with the following tasks and technologies:

  • OS (operating system) support, maintenance, and monitoring for Microsoft Windows Server family & Enterprise Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Oracle Linux, Alma Linux, etc.); experience with other Linux distributions is an asset

  • Deployment best practices, hardening, and configuration for above systems

  • Documentation & diagramming for technical workflows and administrator guides

  • Operating system image design, creation & maintenance

  • DNS (including BIND9 & Microsoft Active Directory)

  • User management via command line tools and in a directory (AD/LDAP)

  • DHCP services (Microsoft Windows DHCP server)

  • Windows Group Policy usage and administration

  • Deployment and configuration automation using Ansible

  • PowerShell or BASH scripting

  • Endpoint protection and local firewall configuration

  • System monitoring and trend analysis

Additional skills that are an asset:

  • Experience managing systems in AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure platforms.

  • Ability to visualize, design & prototype new systems to solve business problems.

  • Project management skills and the ability to evaluate and estimate work effort.

  • Experience managing systems in a version controlled environment (Git/Gitlab).

  • Previous experience deploying and managing Citrix virtual apps.

Non-technical and professional skills:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required; bilingualism (French & English) is an asset.

  • Must be able to work creatively and independently, using all available resources to resolve technical problems that arise on a day-to-day basis.

  • Strongly self-motivated with an ability to effectively manage time and priorities.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills will be required to navigate complex projects and team structures and to ascertain the best approach to addressing conflict when it arises.

  • Ability to disseminate technical information to other CBC/Radio-Canada personnel and vendors, including non-technical colleagues who may be important partners and stakeholders.

  • A written technical test (45 minutes) will be administered for shortlisted candidates.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
