ITW Electrical Engineer in Troy, Ohio

Hobart Food Machines is seeking an Electrical Engineer with 5+ years of experience to focus on new product development in Troy, Ohio. Hobart Food Machines is part of Illinois Tool Works, and is a recognized leader among commercial food equipment worldwide. The selected candidate will report to the Engineering Manager - Food Machines. This is a key growth position within the Food Machines engineering team and will work with all products across the business.

This position requires the development of electrical and electro-mechanical systems as part of the NPD team. It requires effective communication with engineers, suppliers, contractors, designers, technicians, and other stakeholders to effectively execute project deliverables.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assess food machines (e.g. slicer, mixer, meat saw, etc.) requirements and develop relevant integrated system architectures which enable subsystem communication, power distribution, and control.

  • Develop next generation Food Machines systems including motor control circuits, interface circuits, display control circuits, VFD’s, HMI’s, safety interlocks.

  • Work with contractors, suppliers and team members as needed to meet design requirements and fulfill cost, schedule, quality, agency, regulatory, and manufacturing requirements.

  • Develop proof of concepts and prototypes throughout the development process using rapid prototyping options such as quick turn PCB’s, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, programmable relays, PLC’s, etc.

  • Drive design, design reviews, integration, assembly, prototype builds, and test efforts.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in analog and digital circuit design.

  • Experience developing products involving some of the following: motor control circuits, interface circuits, display control circuits, VFD’s, HMI’s, safety interlocks.

  • Experience with common embedded hardware such as: STM32, ARM M Series, PIC, FPGA, etc.

  • Experience with common embedded communication protocols such as: UART, I2C, RS-485, CAN, SPI, Bluetooth, etc.

  • Proven record of developing, implementing, and managing robust product designs.

  • Preferred familiarity with electrical standards and conformance such as UL and NEC.

  • Design tool experience such as Altium, KiCad or Pads

  • Preferred experience with C/C++/Python

  • Preferred experience with electrical testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and data loggers.

  • Ability to prioritize, coordinate, and deliver results.

  • Must be a self-starter, creative thinker, adaptable, flexible, and have a sense of urgency with strong hands-on development and leadership skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, listening, negotiation, and knowledge sharing across technical and non-technical audiences.

  • The ability to support diverse internal and external teams.

  • Proficient in all computer-related software packages (Microsoft Office, etc.) and additional technologies as required to execute engineering projects.

  • You will work in a team-oriented office and R&D environment.

  • Travel will be required (up to 5%)

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • PPE required: Steel toe shoes and eye protection are required in manufacturing and lab areas.
