JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Cardinale lab (https://sites.psu.edu/bradcardinale/) at Penn State (https://psu.edu) is looking to hire a Postdoctoral Scholar to join our research team and help extend work on how biodiversity influences ecosystem services. The successful candidate will have liberty to pursue numerous avenues of research, including: (1) working on new data syntheses to summarize existing studies that have quantified biodiversity’s role in regulating ecosystem services; (2) leading novel lab or field-based studies to determine how biodiversity affects ecosystem services; (3) developing ecological production functions that quantify the monetary or non-monetary value of biodiversity to one or more ecosystem services.

The Cardinale lab, which is housed in Penn State’s Department of Ecosystem Science and Management (https://ecosystems.psu.edu/) , works primarily on the conservation and restoration of biodiversity in freshwater habitats. However, the lab’s research frequently extends to other organisms and ecosystems in an attempt to look for generalities. The successful candidate will interact with the large number of PIs, Postdoctoral Scholars, and graduate students participating in Penn State’s Water Initiative (https://iee.psu.edu/water) , as well as a cross-campus biodiversity initiatives led by PSU’s Sustainability Institute (https://sustainability.psu.edu/) and the Institute for Sustainable Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Science (https://agsci.psu.edu/safes/research/critical-issues/precision-biodiversity) (SAFES). This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.

Education and Experience: Individuals must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental or Ecological Economics, or related field with degree requirements complete by the application date. A strong publication record is required and experience working in biodiversity conservation and/or quantification of ecosystem services is preferred. Individuals who will enhance the lab’s mission to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion of individuals who have historically been under-represented in STEM disciplines are especially encouraged to apply.
