Position Summary

Graduate Resident Directors (GRDs) work with the Office of Student Living and Campus Engagement team to foster an inclusive residential environment that fulfills the mission, goals, and vision of the office and the Division of Student Affairs. GRDs are 10-month, 20 hours a week, graduate students who live-in and collaborate with the Office of Student Living and Campus Engagement to provide overall management of an assigned residential area. The Graduate Resident Directors report directly to the Director of Student Living and indirectly to additional Student Living professional staff as appropriate. These positions include working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty at Utica University. A Graduate Resident Director should be well-organized and able to work in a fast-paced, complex organization with daily priority changes. A successful Graduate Resident Director should possess excellent interpersonal communication, organization, administration, and supervision skills as well as a commitment to educate students, engage the community, and enrich the Utica University experience.

The Office of Student Living and Campus Engagement is recruiting for 1 Graduate Resident Director position. Depending on availability, the Graduate Resident Director will serve in one of the following specialty areas:

  • Graduate Resident Director of South Hall: This position oversees the administration and management of a corridor-style residence hall serving approximately 200 first-year students.

  • Graduate Resident Director of Boehlert Hall and Community Development: This position oversees the administration and management of a suite-style residence hall serving approximately 150 upperclass students while also assisting the office with oversight of our residential curriculum and community development initiatives.

  • Graduate Resident Director of Student Support: This position assists the department with evening support for our residential community during the hours of Monday-Friday 7pm-11pm including co-supervision of our Student Living Evening Assistants.

  • Graduate Resident Director for Operations and Marketing: This position assists in the administration and management of our operations and marketing initiatives including direct supervision of our Student Living Marketing Coordinators.

    Major Responsibilities

  • Staff/Student Leadership Development

  • Assist in implementing, assessing, and continuously developing the recently developed Student Living Student Staff model.

  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, and training of new professional and paraprofessional staff.

  • Assist in the supervision, evaluation, and development of paraprofessional student staff members that work in your assigned residential area.

  • Programming and Community Development

  • Assists in the development of an inclusive and involved residential community.

  • Develop meaningful relationships with students by providing opportunities for growth and development.

  • Assist in the implementation of the Residential Curriculum.

  • Assist in the facilitation of the Residence Hall Association and Hall Councils when appropriate.

  • Do daily rounds throughout respective area buildings.

  • Initiate contact on a regular basis with students in all area buildings. Be aware of and report problems and individual concerns of residents.

  • Intervention and Referral

  • Serve as a student conduct administrator and adjudicate first-time, low-level violations of Residence Hall and University policies and procedures as needed.

  • Administer roommate mediation meetings as needed.

  • Identify and assist with reaching out to students of concern (behavioral, academic, etc.)

  • Serve in the first-level crisis management on-call rotation one night per week from 11pm-8am.

  • Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assists in the coordination of the overall administrative management of a residential area including but not limited to: occupancy management, facilities, opening/closing, and budgets.

  • Serve as a member of departmental committees when appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Duties and assignments are subject to change at the discretion of the department.

    Education & Experience Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited university (a student who is in a transitional program may be considered if they have successfully completed at least 3 years of undergraduate coursework).

    Minimum Skills/Abilities

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Undergraduate experience living on campus.

  • Experience working with a diverse group of students.

  • Experience working as a Resident Assistant or programming/student leadership experience
