The Arc Oneida-Lewis Chapter Grant Writer in Utica, New York

General Statement of Duties:

The Grant Writer will research, write, format, and submit compelling, high-quality grant proposals to funding agencies (federal, state, and private foundations) while applying knowledge of fundraising methods and plans to reach goals. This role is responsible for proactively researching and analyzing grant opportunities and making recommendations on their feasibility. This position will collaborate with leaders and team members to develop relationships with key stakeholders and develop supporting documents and maintain donor database and records. The Grant Writer will identify funding opportunities, draft proposals, prepare supporting documentation and reports to meet grant guidelines for submission.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Guide and manage the grant solicitation process (including proposal/report writing) in a timely manner, while ensuring compliance, accountability and integrity. Guide and manage the fund development process including individual giving via annual giving, planned giving, and major gifts.

  • Identify resources both internal and external to the organization to support the grant proposal development process.

  • Demonstrate excellence in grants management through high-quality writing, precision in planning and budgeting, and an understanding of the organization's mission and culture.

  • Seek and secure support and grant funding for existing programs and new initiatives.

  • Prepare well-organized, compelling grant proposals that follow the requirements of the funder, including writing narratives and budgets, completing forms, and packaging.

  • Coordinate with senior leadership and appropriate program staff on timetables, meetings, and collection of needed data/supplemental documentation for grant applications.

  • Track grant applications submitted and funding status.

  • Maintain calendar of funding deadlines, including proposals, reports and renewals.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical, detail-oriented writing and editing and the ability to craft a persuasive proposal in a variety of program areas.

  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to manage relationships, work as a team, and effectively communicate with program staff, grantors, and other funders.

  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to work independently and manage multiple tight deadlines simultaneously.

  • Ability to work flexibly, productively, and collegially with the writing of others.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic deadline-driven environment.

    Education and Experience

    Any combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.

    Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in grant writing, marketing communications, public policy, public administration, or a related field.

  • Evidence of technical/scientific writing ability, as demonstrated by writing samples.

  • Demonstrated success in preparing grant proposals through award, or leading complex/interdisciplinary strategic initiatives.
