The Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) program at Binghamton University is one of eight TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen participating students' math and science skills. Upward Bound Math-Science serves high school students from low-income families, high school students from families where neither parent holds a bachelor's degree, and those preparing to enter postsecondary education. The program aims to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and encourage them to pursue and complete postsecondary degrees in math and science and, ultimately, careers in math and science.

The part-time Academic Counselor is under the general supervision of the Upward Bound Math-Science Assistant Director and co-directors. Upward Bound Math-Science is a Thomas Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science and Decker School of Nursing component.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The academic year component requires the Counselor to work varied hours based on program needs. Summer hours will vary based on the summer program's requirements.

Academic Counselor and Advisement:

  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of new participants.

  • Visit the assigned school weekly to meet with students, teachers, principals, and guidance counselors.

  • Maintain regular contact with parents through monthly meetings, appointments, and telecommunications.

  • Assist the Assistant Director in student/tutor supervision at after-school tutoring sessions.

  • Confirm graduates' enrollment and attendance at colleges and universities.

  • Additional tasks as outlined and assigned by the program directors.

Programming/Activity Coordination:

  • Assist in coordinating the activity calendar for the academic year.

  • Conduct monthly Saturday meetings on campus alongside part-time staff.

  • Work with community agencies and organizations to provide community service projects for students.

  • Coordinate Alumni Relations by creating and maintaining a database of Upward Bound Math-Science Alumni and consistently communicating with alums.

Student Record Maintenance/Report Generation:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed student records and other data specified by the program directors. This will require the use of database software and general reporting.

Professional Development Activities:

  • Attend relevant professional development training and conferences (required).

Publications:

  • Responsible for assisting with developing program newsletters, brochures, and activity/informational flyers.

  • Must use social media for program activities and communication

    Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in any field.

  • Experience with college counseling/advisement and youth program development is required.

  • Strong organizational, oral, written, and computer skills.

  • Self-motivated and able to exercise independent judgment.

  • Reliable transportation.

    Additional Information:

Salary: $22,000 annually. Part-time 20 hrs/wk, 12-month position.
