Who We Are

The Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute, a Department of Energy University Facility, is jointly supported by DOE and the State of Texas and is a major technical and educational resource for the state and the nation. At the Institute, we focus on conducting basic research, educating students in accelerator-based science and technology, and providing technical capabilities for a wide variety of applications in space science, materials science, analytical procedures and nuclear medicine. Approximately 100 Institute members – scientists, engineers, technicians, support staff, graduate students and undergraduate students – are involved in these programs. What We Want

The Accelerator Physicist I will work collaboratively with Cyclotron staff and faculty to implement facility upgrades, as well to facilitate improvements and repairs to the existing particle-accelerator devices housed at the Cyclotron Institute. These devices include cyclotrons, ion sources, beam-line components, as well as spectrometers and associated detectors. Towards these ends, the Accelerator Physicist I will be responsible for advice, calculations, design, and operation of both existing and envisioned systems. What You Need to Know

Salary Range: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire's experience.

Work Schedule: Ability to occasionally work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering or closely related field from an Accredited College or University, or a combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge behind accelerator design, beam dynamics, beam diagnostics, and beam transport principles.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols for working with high-energy particle beams

  • Ability to communicate complex concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Accelerator Physics, Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Chemistry or Nuclear Engineering from an Accredited College or University

  • Attended the US Particle Accelerator School on various accelerator topics

  • Ability to simulate beam dynamics, particle tracking, and optimization

  • Ability to interpret data from instruments to assess beam quality and performance

  • Proficiency in using simulation software tools for accelerator and associated equipment such as COMSOL, LISE, TRANSPORT, RAYTRACE, MCNP, PHITS, TOSCA, EMP, POISSON, and SRIM.

  • Ability to present work conducted at the Cyclotron Institute at various conference and workshops

Physical Requirements:

Walk, sit, stand, and lift moderately heavy weight

Responsibilities:

  • Cyclotron Institute Operations: Operates ion sources, cyclotrons, beam line elements and accelerator equipment for the Cyclotron science and applied physics programs. Works with the Accelerator Technician and other Cyclotron staff to maintain a safe and efficient work environment. Troubleshoots and reports problems with accelerator equipment. Learns to tune and adjust the various accelerator devices and associated beam transport systems to deliver ion beams of the required quality and intensity to the various Cyclotron Institute experiments. Learns how to calculate the parameters of the accelerator and beam transport systems for existing and newly developed beams.

  • Assists in the maintenance, operation, implementation, and improvement to the various magnetic spectrometers and associated accelerator equipment housed at the Cyclotron Institute.

  • Various Program Support: Participates in the design, maintenance, and implementation of improved detector systems for the Cyclotron Institute nuclear science programs. Participates in various experimental programs to enhance accelerator and detection capabilities and scientific output at the Cyclotron Institute. Occasionally assist the Radiation Effects Facility project by tuning ion sources and adjusting the various accelerator devices and associated beam transport systems to deliver ion beams as necessary.

  • Research Support: Writes journals and publications on the technologies developed in accelerator physics at the Cyclotron Institute and performs other duties as assigned.
