Description

The County of San Mateo - San Mateo Medical Center is seeking experienced Custodians/Housekeepers to be responsible for custodial/housekeeping duties. The current vacancies are Extra Help, Part-Time positions.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of hands-on work experience performing the duties listed below in a government, hospital, locked facility, or similar facility. Experience in cleaning and disinfecting patient care areas including patient rooms, nursing stations, bathrooms, etc... is desired, but not required.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work from a prepared work schedule and sweep, scrub, strip, wax, buff, polish, and vacuum floors.

  • Sweep, shampoo, and vacuum carpeted areas; remove spots, spills, and debris from floors.

  • Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, screens, fixtures, blinds, louvers, and equipment.

  • Clean walls, woodwork, and handrails.

  • Clean glass, metal, and wood doors, windows, and counters.

  • Clean elevators, escalators, phone booths, and drinking fountains.

  • Accurately inventories and distributes clean linen to designated units.

  • Inspects linen for possible stains, rips, tears or other unacceptable qualities as part of linen reject program.

  • Perform restroom service including cleaning and sanitizing waste receptacles, dispensers, walls, partitions, mirrors, urinals, and commodes, sweeping, mopping, or machine scrubbing floors and restocking supplies.

  • Pick up papers and other refuse on grounds and sweep walks and entrances.

  • Move furniture, supplies, and equipment.

  • Assist in moving or rearranging chairs, tables, desks, furniture, and other equipment.

  • Clean and polish metalwork.

  • Empty, clean, and reline waste containers.

  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.

  • Secure buildings by closing windows, locking doors, and turning out lights and/or by checking same.

  • Make or assist with miscellaneous minor repairs or adjustments in equipment.

  • Maintain custodial equipment and supplies.

  • Raise and lower flags.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is one year of custodial experience.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent is required for Custodians working for the Department of Public Works.

Knowledge of:

  • Proper use of cleaning materials, chemicals, and disinfectants.

  • Modern tools, equipment, and techniques used in cleaning large multi-purpose facilities.

  • Proper methods for clean-up and disposal of hazardous wastes.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Follow oral and written instructions and relay information accurately.

  • Read and understand labels and work orders and complete order forms.

  • Operate a variety of mechanized cleaning equipment including buffers, auto-scrubbers, and extractors.

  • Lift and carry tools, equipment, or materials and supplies; bend, stoop, and reach overhead; stand and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Make minor repairs and do minor maintenance work.

  • Maintain safe working practices.

  • Work courteously and effectively with the public and co-workers.

  • Adjust to an immediate in priorities.
