What we want

The Director, Marketing and Communications, is responsible for providing direct, day-to-day Marketing and Communications support for the Galveston Campus Chief Operating Officer, Vice President of Texas A&M University, and Superintendent of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy as well as all members of the campus leadership. Plans and implements a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy. Promotes advancement of department or member by enhancing name recognition and public perception through strategic marketing channels.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Communications, or other applicable field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ten years of related experience.

  • Three years of supervisory experience.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with social media content strategy development, execution and management. Outstanding writing skills.

  • Ability to identify and generate compelling content for distribution across a host of channels including social media; publications; video; advertisements; news releases; web; and in-person events.

  • Ability to develop and align marketing and communications to an overarching strategic plan and reflect the core values of the institution.

  • Ability to serve as spokesperson for the organization in consultation with the TAMUG Chief Operating Officer and TAMU Vice President and Superintendent of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy

  • Ability to work well in a matrix environment to gain input from various stakeholders (colleges, faculty, staff, students, administration, former students, community, maritime thought leader organizations, etc.)

  • Ability to write speeches for senior executive leadership and facilitate opportunities for speaking engagements

  • Ability to provide leadership, advice and expertise at the executive level for campus Marketing and Communications.

  • Strong technical abilities across multiple communication capabilities.

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Proven ability to lead teams through complex requirements of matrix environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or related field.

  • Demonstrated management skills.

  • Previous innovative and strategic event experience.

  • Knowledge of TAMU communications protocols, policies, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of media law; video production, multimedia, and podcast development skills.

  • Previous experience in crisis management.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

Plans and implements a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy. Promotes advancement of department or member by enhancing name recognition and public perception through strategic marketing channels.

Strategic Marketing and Communications

  • Advises COO/Superintendent and campus leadership on marketing and communications opportunities, reputation advancement, and crisis mitigation strategies and recommends plans of action.

  • Provides executive communications support to the COO/Superintendent for all high-level initiatives and communications.

  • Formulates, implements, and enforces strategic marketing and communications plans in support of institutional priorities, including branding, strategies, resources, policies and procedures.

  • Liaises with Texas A&M University in College Station and represents the Galveston Campus in official capacities.

  • Develops strategic partnerships with marketing and communications professionals and brands to further Division strategic plan. Serves as campus spokesperson.

  • Serves as a member of the Galveston Campus Executive Team, the State Maritime Academy Communications Council, and relevant committees at Texas A&M University.

Administration and departmental Leadership and Supervision of MarCom Team

  • Participates in annual campus budget and strategic planning as a member of the executive team.

  • Directs the division budget and oversees expenditures and other fiscal functions for MarCom.

  • Tracks, verifies, reviews and approves all expenditures related to programs and initiatives, documents/files related paperwork with the business office and related departments.

  • Leads campus marketing and communications staff and serves as chief creative director.

  • Provides consultation, guidance, and education on best practices for contributing personnel from other campus units.

  • Assigns workflows and responds to strategic priorities.

Media Relations

  • Proactive and passive outreach to media to cultivate opportunities to enhance awareness and reputation of the Galveston Campus.

  • Create and maintain lists of media outlets, reporters, and influencers.

  • Arranges news coverage, photography, and videography and provides guidance and consultation as needed on publication and multimedia.

  • Collaborates with the College Station campus, The Texas A&M University System and strategic partners to develop media outreach and response efforts.

  • Field inquiries. Facilitate media training opportunities for administrators, faculty and staff.

  • Develops and coordinates Experts list and collaborates with the College Station campus to pitch and facilitate media opportunities for faculty and staff experts.

Content Creation, Production and Oversight

  • Develops ideas; identifies creative approaches; researches and implements communications and promotional initiatives, including special projects and events with high reputational impact.

  • Directs and engages in the planning, writing, editing, photographing, designing, development, production and dissemination of news releases, multimedia, social media, newsletters, presentations, reports, brochures, website, and other marketing materials.

  • Leverages new technologies to market and communicate.

  • Researches, writes, and edits COO speeches.

  • Initiatives and prepares executive communications for COO and Superintendent.
