DESCRIPTIVE STATEMENT:

This is a skilled non-exempt position, under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor or Fleet Superintendent. The Auto Mechanic diagnoses, inspects, maintains, and repairs automotive vehicles and equipment. The work involves servicing and repairing cars, trucks, construction equipment, police and fire vehicles and other automotive related equipment. This position may be required to work overtime and be on call during storm and emergency situations.

This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It’s not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of the position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs a wide range of automotive inspection, maintenance, repair, rebuild and modification duties, including the tear down, repair, modification, overhaul and reassembly of major automotive components and assemblies of city-owned and other vehicles

  • Reads and interprets complex blueprints, schematics, service manuals and follows manufacturer instructions

  • Performs engine performance diagnosis and preventative maintenance using electronic testers/analyzers

  • Diagnoses cause of equipment malfunction

  • Determines repair methods and orders appropriate parts and equipment

  • Adjusts, cleans, repairs, replaces, installs and/or modifies defective, missing or malfunctioning components of gas, diesel, and alternative powered vehicles and equipment including computerized engine, transmission, brake, hydraulic, fuel, ignition, driveline, electronic and other systems and assemblies

  • Installs a variety of accessory parts and equipment including lights, trailer hitches and generators

  • Welds, fabricates, and modifies standard equipment parts and pieces to fit standards for city vehicles and ensures that all adapted parts are safe, effective and efficient

  • Responds to emergency service calls and performs field and on-the-road repairs as required

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment to verify existence of reported malfunctions, test completed repairs and move vehicles within the service area

  • Ensures that all work activities adhere to all applicable federal, state, local and industry safety standards, and emissions mandates

  • Maintains vehicle history records, part inventory records and work schedules

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade as required

  • Cleans shop area and vehicles as necessary

  • Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of automotive and equipment repair

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to:

  • Frequently lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries up to sixty (60) pounds to move equipment, parts, tools and supplies

  • Frequently performs activities requiring full range of body movement including walking, standing, squatting, bending, crawling, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching and twisting to perform repair work

  • Constant near/far acuity and hearing to perform vehicle inspections, identify mechanical problems and communicate with employees, supervisors, and citizens

  • Considerable eye/hand/foot coordination to operate tools and automotive equipment as well as to drive equipment and vehicles

  • Constant light, firm grasp, fine manipulation, and handling to successfully perform minor and major repairs.

  • Constant step up/down and actuate mechanism to safely enter/exit and operate vehicles

  • Occasional sitting to perform office tasks and test drive vehicles

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

This position requires knowledge of:

  • Proper use of maintenance and repair tools, equipment, and materials associated with automotive repair

  • Occupational hazards and standard shop safety practices

  • Methods and practices of vehicle and heavy equipment repair, maintenance and modification

  • Operational characteristics of a variety of gasoline-powered and diesel-powered engines, alternative powered hybrid vehicles, battery electric powered vehicles and automotive transmissions

  • A wide variety of electronic, hydraulic, pumping, fuel, and mechanical systems

  • Standard computer systems and software applications

  • Methods and techniques of welding and metal fabrication

  • The proper use of diagnostic equipment

  • Applicable Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations

This position requires the skill and ability to:

  • Modify parts and/or pieces of automotive related equipment to fit standards for city vehicles

  • Read, interpret, and work from drawings, sketches, and online and paper service manuals

  • Utilize a variety of repair and diagnostic equipment and tools, including welding equipment to fabricate needed parts

  • Accurately diagnose, identify, repair and/or modify mechanical defects on standard, heavy, and computerized vehicles, and equipment

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

  • Perform basic math computations to calculates accurate repair cost estimates

  • Maintain related records

  • Provide and maintain necessary hand tools to perform the assigned tasks

  • Perform all the job duties in a safe and responsible manner

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above, the individual must possess:

  • Three (3) years of recent experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic in a truck or heavy equipment shop, automobile repair where experience in working with computerized engines, hybrid and battery electric vehicle systems, fuel injection systems, turbochargers, blowers, and automatic and manual transmissions (light and heavy) has been obtained.

  • Currently certified or have previously been certified (not more than 5 years expired) with A.S.E. or O.E.M. certification is required

OR

  • 5 years professional recent experience as a heavy equipment mechanic specializing in diesel, hydraulic systems, and welding experience where certification is unavailable or uncommon.

AND

  • A high school diploma or GED.

  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must be willing to submit to and pass the following post-conditional job offer requirements:

  • Background investigation which includes criminal history, education verification, employment references and driver’s license record

  • Physical examination

  • Drug screening

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Background, training, or experience in Ford products, specifically electrical, drivability, advanced diagnostics, and alternative powered vehicles

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Work is constantly performed in an automotive shop and occasionally outdoors with constant exposure to all types of weather conditions. The employee may work in close proximity to moving vehicles, parts and equipment, with regular exposure to dangerous gases, fumes, chemicals, grease, odors, dust, noise and vibrations related to automotive repair. The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids and/or biosolids while performing work on public safety and/or wastewater vehicles. The individual must be able to drive or learn to drive a wide range of vehicles and equipment with automatic and manual transmissions. The employee may be subject to call-out in emergencies. The employee must have his or her own tools.

Within 6 months after date of hire or promotion, the employee must obtain and maintain the following:

  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements

  • An EPA approved certification for motor vehicle air conditioning servicing and repair

  • At least one (1) Current A.S.E. certification

Within 18 months after the date of hire or promotion, the employee must obtain and maintain A.S.E. Certification as Master Technician in Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck.

All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination.
