Primary Function

The Lab Technician I will provide support and input to Engineering team in the evaluation, development, and innovation of new products. The Lab Technician I will also work with Engineering team to develop and test boilers, water heaters, and heat pumps by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities

  • Build product prototypes or sub-assemblies by following written instructions, verbal directions, and/or assembly drawings and schematics

  • Fabricate assemblies using skills such as welding, brazing, and soldering

  • Utilizes various power and non-power tools to build prototypes and test equipment

  • Read and interpret engineering documents such as CAD drawings, electrical schematics, wiring and ladder diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams

  • Fabricate complex test fixtures to accomplish unique product development test requirements

  • Conduct non-standard, product development tests and make recommendations to engineers based on test results

  • Set up, conduct, observe and record the results of operational performance tests and evaluations for complete units and/or individual components

  • Employ mathematical tools to ensure accurate set-ups and data

  • Record test procedures and results with both numerical and graphical data and present results to engineering team and other lab technicians

  • Utilize ANSI standards, Canadian standards, UL standards, and other applicable product safety and performance standards to test boilers, water heaters, and heat pumps

  • Responsible for maintaining safe work practices and the professional appearance of the work area

  • Properly use and service lab tools and testing / measuring equipment

Essential Skills

  • Has a working knowledge of the electrical functions of the unit under test

  • Understands the basics of a voltmeter, amp meter, thermocouple meter, flue gas analyzer, and other lab equipment

  • Understands the basic lab terminology

  • Identifies and solves complex product or lab test setup problems

  • Understands how a boiler, water heater, or heat pump work and how the various parts comprising the product function together

  • Possesses good problem-solving skills and demonstrates creativity and curiosity

  • Works effectively both independently and as part of a team

  • Utilizes effective communication methods, both written and verbal, to present data and complex, technical ideas to engineering and lab team

  • Self-motivated and productive with a positive attitude

  • Understands safe working practices in the lab environment

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)with a minimum of 6 months of related experience

  • Fabrication skills such as welding, brazing, or soldering

  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in a lab environment

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand.

  • The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally listen for noise produced by units and components.
