What we want

Under the supervision and direction of a Veterinary Pathologist, the Medical Laboratory Manager manages, supervises, and coordinates the Clinical Laboratory. Participates in the activities of Laboratory personnel performing tests in the different areas of the Laboratory. Oversees all Laboratory services, operations, testing, and reporting. Position has responsibility for quality and quantity of work, procedures, personnel, and costs.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Ten years’ related experience in all phases of laboratory medicine, including supervisory and business management experience.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) certification. Specialty training in related area. Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists .

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and statistical procedures.**

  • Advanced computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry.

  • Thorough knowledge of equipment typically used in the laboratory and various manual and statistical procedures that may be required to perform the tests requested. **

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to manage time and prioritize duties and cases.

  • Must be able to work within time constraints and in crisis situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree

  • More than ten years’ experience in all phases of laboratory medicine, including supervisory and business management experience with a master’s degree

Responsibilities:

  • Supervisory: Assumes supervision for and trains medical technologists assigned within the Clinical Pathology Laboratory. Performs annual job performance evaluations for assigned staff. Designs and organizes work schedules tailored to meet programmed needs within the service area. Works with Hospital Administration and other supervisors on personnel matters affecting morale and job efficiency. Assists with teaching duties and provides advanced training of Medical Technologists I, II, III and student technicians. Schedules laboratory staff on a rotating basis and modifies the daily schedule if unforeseen absences occur. Communicates with clinical staff and administration as needed. Ensures adequate coverage of the laboratory to provide services. Participates in committee and team meetings. Provides technical supervision to laboratory services, operations, testing, and reporting while monitoring quality control of instruments and assays.

  • Laboratory and Instructional: Ensures Regulatory Compliance (CLIA, CAP, AAAHC, OSHA, or the veterinary equivalent and the State of Texas) if applicable. Ensures procedures used are adequate to determine the accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method. Ensures laboratory personnel are performing the test methods as required for accurate and reliable results. Ensures that the laboratory is enrolled in an approved quality assurance proficiency-testing program for the testing performed. Ensures that quality control and quality assurance programs are established and maintained. Ensures the establishment and maintenance of acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system. Ensures that all necessary remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviations from the laboratory’s established performance characteristics are identified. Ensures that consultation is available to the clinician on matters relating to the quality of the test results reported and their interpretation concerning specific patient. Keeps Pathologist/Laboratory Director and Hospital Director informed as to the operational issues of the laboratory. Validates new methodologies and instruments and oversees the establishment of reference intervals in conjunction with the Pathologist/Laboratory Director. Implements new methodologies, which meet statistical criteria after joint reviews with the Laboratory Director. Uses information and network systems appropriately and efficiently. Oversees research projects and is available for consultation of such projects in conjunction with the Laboratory Director and researcher.

  • Procedures/Training: Provides orientation and training to new laboratory staff, interns, residents and 4th year professional students. Updates internal policies as required. Coordinates activities related to compliance for the Laboratory Service Area. Develops, implements, and reviews departmental policies and procedures. Maintains and updates policy manuals to reflect organizational policy and regulatory requirements. Develops, implements, reviews, and evaluates quality control and preventive maintenance program in assigned areas of responsibility. Alters program in-services and counsels’ employees as necessary to ensure that quality control and maintenance tests and procedures are performed and documented properly. Evaluates, measures, reviews, and reports the Laboratory Quality Improvement Processes. Adheres to Laboratory and departmental policies and procedures to include quality control, quality assurance, and safety; utilizes advanced job knowledge, judgment and problem solving to ensure quality by following established policies and procedures for quality control performance and documentation. Attends and participates in advanced and supervisory continuing education programs as required. Occasionally participates in teaching pathology trainees/residents or professional students OR designation of this duty to Medical Technologist I, II, or III. Monitors the quality control program for the hospital’s point of care instruments and instruments in satellite laboratories

  • Equipment Monitor and Record Data : Maintains accountability for inventory control of equipment and supplies within the service area and assumes responsibility for performing regularly scheduled preventative maintenance checks on hospital equipment. Maintains section inventory. Oversees or performs quality control monitoring and prepares reports. Arranges for laboratory equipment maintenance when necessary. Oversees instrument service arrangements and supervises instrument repair as needed. Evaluates new instrumentation, prepares cost analysis, and recommends new, expanded, or replacement purchases as determine necessary. Assures that all charges for treatments and supplies are correct and entered in the hospital information system. Assists with complex billing, fee reviews, and technical questions. Reviews laboratory requests for accuracy and completeness. Works with Infection Control Coordinator on possible zoonotic issues with clinical cases.

  • Maintain Service Area : Supervises and provides infectious disease control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working environment. Provides oversight to ensure that a sanitary and well-organized service area is maintained and that supplies, reagents, and solutions are restocked.

  • Training and Certification : Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, and licensure where appropriate. Radiation safety Infection Control. Rabies prophylaxis. Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP). Performs other duties as assigned.
