General Summary

The Network Engineer II, under the general direction of the Director of Network and Telecommunications, performs complex and non-routine specialized network support and engineering functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, and problem-solving, which also includes managing the residential living technology deterrents and reporting systems required by the Federal Higher Education Opportunity Act. Other job duties include supporting campus wireless networks and authentication systems, Microsoft Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, voice-over IP communications, and video surveillance systems, server. Works daily to ensure that areas of Network Services follow West Texas A&M University rules and procedures, as well as with the Texas A&M University System, PCI security standards, and/or other standards such as FERPA, copyright protection laws, and the State of Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) Texas Administrative Codes (TAC) 202, information security standards for institutions of higher education. Responsible for all aspects of system security patches and updates and remains current on networking trends and best practices. Participates in mentoring, training, and development of other employees.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides day-to-day support, administration, and security of the campus network and voice infrastructure and residential living network systems, including Harrington Academic Hall, the Enterprise Network in Amarillo, Texas, TVMDL, VERO, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

  • Plans and implements improvements, modifications, security and system hardening, and/or replacements of the University’s network infrastructure systems.

  • Reviews the accuracy of documentation of network engineering designs, plans, maps, methods, and procedures. Documents problems and repairs.

  • Assists project leaders with developing work plans and project time schedules, including outlining phases, identifying personnel, and computing equipment requirements.

  • Conducts research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to support network development and adoption of best practices.

  • Establishes standards for the development of plans for new networks or upgrades. Oversees input from clients, systems administrators, contractors, and vendors to develop specifications and plans for enterprise-wide networks.

  • Works with clients to identify networking supporting clients’ support needs. Consult with clients to review project plans and schedules, secure approval of test results, and discuss problems or concerns.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of modern enterprise network architectures, application of concepts of networking systems, multi-layer networking switching and multi-protocol routing, enterprise-level network operations, multi-team coordination, and change management.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in CIS, CS, or closely related technology field.

  • Experience with enterprise wireless services, voice over IP (VoIP), and network-based video surveillance technologies.

  • Industry certifications with Cisco, Palo Alto, or Microsoft.

  • Security hardening of systems and networks.
