Job Description Summary: NSF NCAR’s Climate and Global Dynamics (CGD) Laboratory is excited to announce the job opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow in their Oceanography Section. This position will investigate the usage of iron fertilization as a technique to achieve marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) from the atmosphere. The Postdoc Fellow will perform global numerical simulations of iron fertilization with version 2 of the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) in various configurations. They will conduct analyses on these simulations and lead peer-reviewed manuscripts documenting the results of the experiments. Analysis will be coordinated with colleagues at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Output will be provided to colleagues to perform high resolution regional ocean simulations.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

The primary duties include:

1) conduct numerical simulations and analyses to address the science questions, and

2) publish the results in peer-reviewed literature and otherwise communicate results to the collaborators and broader scientific community,

Additionally, this position comes with unique opportunities to collaborate with a broader team including modelers and observationalists.

The position will also allow the postdoctoral fellow to participate in professional development activities including those offered by the Advance Study and the Early Career Development Programs.

Who We'd Love To Join Our Team

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:Education and Experience (Required/Desired):

A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in atmospheric science, climate science and/or related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required/Desired)

  • Experience of analyzing output data of general circulation models, ocean models, and regionally refined models or similar.

  • Demonstrated understanding of ocean biogeochemical cycles.

  • Demonstrated capacity to develop sophisticated diagnostics for climate dynamics research.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Proficient in scientific Python.

DESIRED

  • Familiarity with the Community Earth System Model (CESM).

  • Familiarity with statistical analysis tools.
