Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.
Job Summary:
This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections and basic repairs on utility vehicles and equipment. Includes, but is not limited to passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUV’s, medium and heavy trucks, trailers and off road equipment. Maintenance operations may take place in the garage or at field locations during various work schedules depending on business needs.
Responsibilities for Vehicle Maintenance Tech I:
Perform preventative maintenance inspections on light & medium duty vehicles/equipment and assist higher classification of technicians with PM’s on all vehicles and equipment. Assist with Federal DOT inspections. Adhere to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) for DOT inspections. Provide assistance on dielectric test inspections.
Perform diagnostics and repairs on light and medium vehicles, (gas & diesel) forklifts, trailers and powered equipment. Service light, medium, and heavy duty tires and rims. Maintain the appropriate level of technical competence required to diagnose and repair vehicles/equipment. Perform hydraulic brake systems and component repairs, including wheel ends. Assist with hydraulic component repairs. Assist with air brake system inspections and repairs. Assist higher classification of technicians with diagnostics and repairs on all vehicles/equipment.
Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair basic electric system components, cranking, lighting, charging systems. Perform basic repairs on light & medium duty vehicle HVAC systems and component repairs.
Responsibilities for Vehicle Maintenance Tech II:
Perform all levels of preventative maintenance inspections on all vehicles, equipment, and aerial devices. Perform DOT inspections. Adhere to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). Perform required ANSI/OSHA inspections.
Troubleshoot/repair/replace all hydraulic systems and components, including troubleshooting of inoperable aerial devices. Inspecting, analyzing, adjusting and repairing all hydraulic and electronic circuits, hydraulic components and attachments. Perform dielectric testing, load test/structural test on aerials and cranes.
Perform diagnostics and repairs on medium and heavy duty trucks, (gas & diesel) light duty, tractors, forklifts, trailers and powered equipment, (plant/construction type equipment). Maintain the appropriate level of technical competence required to diagnose and repair vehicles/equipment.
Troubleshoot ABS systems, hydraulic brake and air brake systems, power take off units, transmissions, transfer cases, differential assemblies and 4x4 front drive axle assemblies.
Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electronic engine controls, electric systems and components, cranking, lighting, charging and electronic transmission controls including hybrid vehicles. Diagnose, repair A/C systems and components. Perform Basic Welding on Steel and Aluminum (Stick, MiG ).

Basic/Required Qualifications for a Vehicle Maintenance Technician I:
T wo year associate degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics from a vocational school
In addition to required degree or certificate, one (1) year minimum of related experience
In lieu of degree or certificate a high school diploma/GED AND two (2) years minimum of related experience
Ability to obtain a Class A CDL license within 6 months of hire date
Basic/Required Qualification for a Vehicle Maintenance Technician II:
Two year associate degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics from a vocational school
In addition to required degree, two (2) years minimum of related work experience
In lieu of degree, high school diploma/GED AND four (4) years minimum of related work experience
Ability to obtain a Class A CDL license within 6 months of hire date
Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
Electric Utility Fleet Experience
Basic Hydraulic Experience
ASE Certifications
AWS Welding Certifications
National Fluid Power Certification
Effective communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills
Demonstrate ability to interact effectively with peers, customers and management
Demonstrate ability to make sound decisions, exercising good judgement and setting priorities
Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Experience with computer equipment, laptops, keyboard, tablets, etc.
Working Conditions
Must be able to stand and walk on concrete surface for extended periods of time
Must be able to work in garage environment with associated noise, fumes and dust and tolerate heights in aerial devices
Must be able to lift and/or push at least 100lbs several times per shift
Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs a distance of at least 25 feet
Repeated bending and twisting is required
Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
Job Specific Requirements :
This position has a residency requirement of living within 60 minutes of the assigned operations complex.
This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight-rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
Must be able to respond to emergency situations
Must be able to travel for training/work related events within Duke Energy's footprint (Midwest, Florida, Carolinas)
