Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world. The Office of Partnerships and Philanthropic Stewardship supports the NPS and its partners in creating, enhancing, and recognizing effective philanthropic partnerships through training, collaboration, communication, and policy leadership, and encourages partnerships to achieve greater citizen engagement in NPS programs and activities.

In partnership with Stewards Individual Placements, the NPS Office of Partnerships and Philanthropic Stewardship (PPS) is seeking a fellow who will support the office's efforts to create, enhance, support, and communicate about philanthropic partnerships within the NPS. This work indirectly supports conservation and preservation of national parks and their resources throughout the country. The fellow will have the opportunity to work with a variety of NPS programs, parks, and partners to engage audiences in protecting and experiencing America’s public lands.

As part of the PPS team, the fellow will support the National Park Service (NPS) and its partners in creating, enhancing, and recognizing effective partnerships through training, collaboration, communication, and policy leadership and encourages partnerships to achieve greater citizen engagement in NPS programs and activities.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Promote communications and partnerships that support conservation and protection of natural and cultural resources, including broadly supporting responses to climate change

  • Facilitate communications, schedule meetings, and develop meeting agendas.

  • Support program and project management and implementation

  • Assist with coordination of corporate volunteer efforts associated with the National Park Foundation.

  • Conduct review/vetting of proposed philanthropic donations, gifts, and cause marketing campaigns as outlined in the policy.

  • Write summary reports to management after reviews (especially donor vetting), including their conclusion and any recommendations.

  • Work with representatives of other Federal agencies, various government and non-governmental organizations, and institutions to develop and organize joint projects and activities.

  • Provide research, administrative, and analytical support for employees engaged in updating reference guides (policy support documentation) relating to partnerships, fundraising, donations, and intellectual property.

  • Work with parks, programs and partners in the resolution of issues/needs/questions related to NPS partnerships policy.

  • Make recommendations for improvements to existing policy; contribute to updates of philanthropic partnerships policy, SOPs, tools and templates; and recommend the development of new tools, methodologies, and concepts to respond to emerging issues

  • Collaborate with DOI Ethics Counselors to resolve matters pertaining to partnership ethics .

  • Research examples and/or precedents for use of agreement types for a variety of partnership opportunities/needs

  • Provide customer service, coordination, and support for PPS programs and activities. Support PPS communications ranging from notetaking to directed research and presentation development.

  • Analyze data and prepare reports on partnership activities.

  • Conduct research and edit and/or write letters, memos, fact sheets, briefing statements, reports, and other materials to disseminate information about partnership programs, internally and externally.

  • Support DOI and NPS partnerships and donation reporting requirements. In particular, support the NPS non-profit reporting program by entering data, performing data analysis based on audited financial statements and IRS 990 submissions, creating spreadsheets, and spearheading the creation and maintenance of a file system within the Partnership Portal that creates easy access to dated records .

  • Serve as the Conference Attendance Reporting System (CARS) liaison for PPS staff and the coordinator for any conferences managed by PPS .

Required Skills

Minimum Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree.

· Excellent written and verbal communications, project management skills.

Be a USA citizen between the ages of 18-30, or Veteran up to the age of 35

Preferred Qualifications:

· Master’s degree.

· Knowledge of nonprofits and how they operate

Benefits:

· Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $7395.00 (pre-tax; must complete 1700 hours of service within 52 week service term).

· Living Allowance: $675 /week (pre-tax)

· Additional member benefit: $645/week (pre-tax)
