Then maybe you are who we are looking for. Metro is seeking to add two experienced and dynamic Sustainability Project Managers to its Sustainability team. These individuals will support Metro¿s decarbonization efforts, identify new opportunities for innovation and technology modernization, deliver implementable strategies and research that catalyze organizational change, and work with diverse internal and external partners to support progress towards a more sustainable DMV. Desired experience in at least one of the following areas: sustainable regional mobility, clean energy purchasing, sustainability performance metrics and reporting, business case analysis, or organizational change management. Professional experience in project and consultant management.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree majoring in Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, Sustainability, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Transportation, Urban Planning or related discipline

  • Coursework in sustainability, climate change, energy, and/or resiliency topics

Minimum Experience

  • A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in sustainability, environmental policy, public administration, transportation planning, project management, business administration, or a related technical field, which must include work on sustainability, energy/decarbonization, resiliency, or climate change projects/programs

  • A Master's degree in sustainability, environmental management, or a related technical field can be counted as two (2) years toward work experience

  • Experience must include A minimum of two (2) years of project or program management experience, or equivalent

Minimum Certification/Licensure

  • LEED Green Associate or AP (BD+C preferred) and/or ISI Envision Certified within the first six months of hire and maintained for the duration of time in job

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Environmental Sciences/Engineering, Urban Planning, Public Policy/Law or similar

  • Experience as a manager of professional staff and/or consultants

Summary

The Sustainability Project Manager leads the implementation of and supports projects to improve agency sustainability, energy, and/or climate resilience, in alignment with the Authority's vision, strategy, and goals. Duties include but are not limited to, identifying and scoping key opportunities for the organization, managing and coordinating strategic projects, building relationships across departments and with regional stakeholders to facilitate collaboration, managing quantitative and qualitative analyses to inform decision-making, and supporting and monitoring the implementation of sustainability initiatives that support best practice adoption, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Essential Functions

Principal Job Duties

  • Leads the design, management, coordination, and control of major office, business improvement projects that deliver and improve the sustainability, climate resilience, and/or decarbonization of Metro

  • Oversees all aspects of project life cycles, setting deadlines, assigning responsibilities, delivering project scopes, developing the project budget, and monitoring progress to ensure precise delivery timelines.

  • Reviews and responds or coordinates responses to high-profile, complex, and politically sensitive executive correspondence, including inquiries from federal, state, regional, and local government officials, Board of Directors, and the general public.

  • Manages contractor teams to deliver business cases, studies, and technical analyses. (E.g., decarbonization strategy, fleet transition planning, utility modeling, energy purchasing strategies, infrastructure design and construction standards, climate resiliency risk assessments, sustainable procurement strategies, and/or transportation-related infrastructure carbon accounting.)

  • Manages complex analyses and presents findings and recommendations to address critical operational and administrative problems ¿ may utilize technical programs such as enterprise-wide energy monitoring software, Power BI dashboard, ArcGIS, and others.

  • Represents Metro and Office of Sustainability to build collaborative partnerships with internal and external partners to enhance the capacity and capabilities of the Authority¿s department to identify and deliver innovative sustainability, energy, and/or resiliency solutions to critical business problems.

  • Assists in developing, implementing, and overseeing departmental policies, procedures, regulations, and outreach initiatives.

  • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvement and implements strategies, processes, and best practices across the Authority to address sustainability, energy, and climate resiliency goals effectively.

  • Supervises staff including recommending applicant selection, assigning duties, directing work, conducting performance evaluations, championing professional development activities, handling disciplinary actions, and resolving grievances, with support from appropriate WMATA departments to ensure compliance with all human capital policies and guidelines and to support Metro's position as an Employer of Choice.

  • Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.
